Are there any flashing red lights on the dashboard of your soul? I learned the hard way to pay attention to the lights and gauges in my car. But what about the gauges of our lives? I once heard a well-known pastor confess, “I always thought if I was in good shape and was having my quiet time, I was invincible. But I never looked at my emotional gauge.” He went on to describe the danger he felt when he was running on empty. His words were prophetic as his ministry crashed some years later.
Zechariah had a word for Zerubbabel (whose name is just fun to say). Governor Zerubbabel was trying to rebuild the temple. He had placed the foundation but many questioned whether the building would ever be complete. Zechariah reminded him that God finishes what he starts. Someday Zerubbabel would place the capstone on the building.
But how? How does God restore his people when they are running on fumes? Not by might. Not by power. But by God’s Spirit! We can’t just try harder. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of hope. He is our only hope! Zechariah’s message was: return to the Lord and he will return to you. What would you have to leave behind to return to the Lord? Do you believe that if you draw near to him he will draw near to you? Let’s take him at his word.
