Isaiah 7:10-14
Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, “Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.”  Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also?  Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."
New International Version (NIV)
What is the Lord saying to you today?   We may get nervous when people say, “The Lord told me . . .”  Many have manipulated others with such claims.  Do we really believe God speaks to us?  If he could tell us anything what would he say?

In Isaiah’s day, the King of Kings spoke to King Ahaz and said, “Ask me for a sign, no matter how big and I will give it to you.”  Ahaz feigned humility saying, “I will not put the Lord to the test.”  It was easier for Ahaz to fall back on a formula than to relate to the God who was calling him.

Enter Isaiah.  Frustrated prophet Isaiah said, “It is one thing for you to exhaust me, but now you are exhausting God’s patience.  He told you to ask for a sign.  Ask.”  Isaiah showed him the sign:  a virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and name him Immanuel.  For Ahaz, the promised child would come in his lifetime as a sign that the king’s enemies would go away.  Later Matthew would show the second fulfillment of this passage.  Mary would conceive a child and he would literally be God’s presence in the world, Immanuel, Jesus.

When God tells us to do something, we should do it.  A. W. Tozer said, “Revival may not be waiting on our prayers but on our obedience.”  Let us start today by doing what God tells us to do in his word.  Then we may be assured that God will take care of the rest.  God’s answer to our needs today is his presence.  Immanuel.  God is with you.  Trust him now.

 Pray with me:
Father, speak to our hearts.  Speak that our souls may hear.  Speak to our hearts, Lord Jesus.  Calm every doubt and fear.  In your holy name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
