TEACHING TIPS: Course Accessibility
|
Did you know that reading order matters when designing and displaying content? Reading order refers to the order in which users read your content. Logical reading order means that content is read and/or displayed top to bottom, and then left to right. When students use screen readers and other assistive technology, these tools will read top to bottom, and then left to right. If you've structured your content in a way that is not logical, it will be extremely confusing to students who use assistive technology tools. Reading order affects all content but is especially important for tables and slide presentations. Watch this Logical Reading Order video created by the Office of Civils Rights to learn more about how logical reading order works.
Thank you for this week's teaching tip to Melanie Eley!

Course Recording Syllabus Language
|
Just added to the UNCG Sample Syllabus - sample language for "Recording within a Course." Language provides the instructor with options for allowing or constraining students recording courses for personal use, while addressing students with formal accommodations through OARS.
|
"A student must not record activity in classrooms or other instructional settings without the express permission of the faculty member responsible for instruction in the course or the Office Accessibility Resources & Services (OARS). Students requesting the use of assistive technology as an accommodation should complete the accommodations process through OARS and should complete the OARS Welcome Form to begin the process. Authorized student-initiated recordings must be used only for the education of the students enrolled in the initiating student’s class during the period in which the student is enrolled in the class. An authorized student-initiated recording must not be made available to anyone outside of the students enrolled in the class in any fashion, including posting online or through other media without the express written consent of the faculty member responsible for the course or the cognizant University administrator."

COURSE ACCESSIBILITY CHECKLISTS AND SUPPORT
Updates to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires that all campus digital content (public facing websites, digital course materials, digital campus resources – including campus trainings) meet the WCAG 2.1 (level A and level AA) standards for accessibility by spring 2026.
UNCG has several campus resources that you can utilize now to make the transition easier, with more tools and resources on the way.
- Accessibility Checklists outlining the minimum expectations for meeting the new standards.
-
UDOIT Cloud is a Canvas scanning tool that will scan your course and provide you with quick solutions that ensure your course is compliance.
-
Accessibility.uncg.edu is a comprehensive accessibility website that offers tools, resources, and quick guides to creating accessible digital content for campus.

Workshop: Teaching Effectiveness: Beyond Teaching Evaluations
This Workshop will focus on alternative inputs for evaluating teaching effectiveness (e.g., student work products, course reviews, mid-semester student feedback, etc.). Using national models created by decades-long, multi-institutional studies on the evaluation of teaching and learning, this workshop will assist in the development of unit-level processes as part of the UNCG Teaching Effectiveness Policy which is pending final approval by the UNC System, and was developed by an institutional work group. TEACHING EVALUATION PILOT
UNCG is administering a pilot of a new teaching evaluation system. The pilot and the current system (Class Climate) will run in parallel for two years; when the Class Climate contract expires, administration will make a decision about which or neither system to keep.
Anthology uses research validated common questions, along with offering units the chance to add custom questions. It’s mobile friendly, which may increase response rates. You can see more information here: Evaluation of Teaching Pilot Project.pptx
