HOUR OF CODE: A GLOBAL EVENT

We live in a world surrounded by technology. We know that whatever fields our students choose to go into as adults, their abilities to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. Helping our students lay the foundations for 21st century skills and building their confidence in technology and computer science are built into our curriculum.

St. Michael's dove enthusiastically into The Hour of Code this week as our students at both campuses practiced coding and brain skills.

Our budding computer scientists tell us that they are eager to keep coding at home over the holidays!  Here are some recommended sites:

For grades K-2, we coded with The Foos:

For grades 3-5, we coded with Minecraft and Star Wars:

For Middle School: Scratch is a free programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations).
St. Michael's is so very thankful for Carol Wise and Melanie Price for leading our Hour of Code initiative. BIG high fives to you both for getting our students energized about computer science!
Christmas Pageant:
  • The Christmas Pageant dress rehearsal will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 17, at the Bon Air Campus. As always, Middle School students will attend the dress rehearsal. Thus, Middle School students should be dropped off at St. Michael's Church by 8:15 a.m. that morning. Drivers who have signed up to transport students back to the Singleton Campus should be at church no later than 9 a.m. Students will be assigned a driver.

  • For families coming to the pageant on Friday, December 18, the church will open at 8 a.m. for an 8:30 a.m. presentation. (Please note the earlier start time this year.)
Eighth Grade Exam Week
We wish all of our eighth graders much success as they take exams this week.  Click here for the exam week schedule.
Middle School Food Drive
The Middle School will continue its Food Bank Challenge until this  Thursday, December 17. We want to challenge our students to surpass last year's donation of 496 pounds of food for the FeedMore Food Bank.Click here for a list of needed food items. Thank you for your support!
Art in the Community
The SUN TRUST BANK ART GALLERY is home this month to 100 pieces of art representing our very creative St M students.  Our families and the general public can view this art work until December 30, 2015.  If you are downtown visiting the Christmas lights, please feel free to see our display at 919 East Main Street.

In addition, we are so fortunate to have a rotating exhibit of art work on display at the BELGRADE CLEANERS in Midlothian.  Every nine weeks, StM art work is displayed for customers to enjoy!
The Reason for the Season
As St. Michael's emphasizes the religious part of the Christmas season, gift giving at School is discouraged. On behalf of all families, the SMPA provides funds for room parents to provide a class gift to all teachers.

Magic Dragon Day
If you find yourself in an "out with the old and in with the new" frame of mind over the holidays, please be sure to keep the following items for Magic Dragon Day, May 7, 2016:
Stuffed Animals - Please set aside your child's gently used stuffed animals to be "won" at the Pet Palace on Magic Dragon Day. Please hold onto your animals at home. We will put the call out for our fuzzy friends to come to school for collection at a later date.
Used Spirit Wear/ Blue Blazers - Donate gently used St M Spirit Wear and navy blue blazers that your child has outgrown. Again, please hold these items at home at this time until we put out collection requests closer to May.
The Fifth Grade Chorus
Our fifth grade chorus gave a joyful Christmas concert this past week. On Tuesday, they will be spreading holiday cheer and performing for the residents at Westminster-Canterbury.
