How can we create classrooms where students feel that they belong and are capable of succeeding? The Student Experience Project (SEP) is a multi-institution initiative that uses research on belonging and mindset to help create learning environments where all students can engage, grow, and succeed. At UNCG, SEP encourages us to consider how everyday teaching practices (from the way we communicate expectations to how we provide feedback) can the student experience in our classrooms. The SEP provides online resources accessible by anyone considering their teaching practices.

Small changes can make meaningful differences. Learning students’ names, creating opportunities for connection, normalizing challenges as part of learning, and providing encouraging, growth-oriented feedback can help students see themselves as valued members of the learning community. Looking for ways to get started? The UNCG SEP website offers practical tools related to social belonging, growth mindset, feedback and self-efficacy, course expectations, social connectedness, and more.  

Faculty can also explore the UTLC teaching guides and resources for additional strategies and support student engagement and course design.  

This fall, we are pleased to continue the Anthology Course Evaluation System pilot as we test a new course evaluation system. Feedback thus far is that the system is easier to use for faculty and students; that it's more mobile friendly; that the reporting is more robust; and that evaluations are easier to do in class (for those teaching in-person), raising response rates.

If you would like to participate in the pilot for Fall 2026 (and have not yet participated), please fill out this form by September 18 for POT1 and November 2 for full term and POT2 classes. The University Teaching and Learning Commons, the Institute for Community and Economic Engagement, and the University Community Engagement Council are pleased to collaborate and sponsor the Fall 2026 Community Engagement discussion group. Instead of discussing a single long text, we will provide long form, short form, and multimedia resources, and look forward to discussing community engagement and teaching with you.

This group is open to faculty, staff, and graduate students. Please register, and we'll send you a calendar invite. And, don't keep us a secret; please spread the word!

Are you looking for a simple way to check in with students? You can use Microsoft Forms to allow students to share how they’re doing without the pressure of putting their name on their response. Anonymous check-ins help you identify barriers to learning, adjust instruction, and create a classroom culture grounded in safety, trust, and choice. Here’s a quick step‑by‑step to get started.
