Caring for our Community: A Message from Gil Preuss
This summer, our community members have consistently and compassionately shown up for one another. Since Federation opened the Jewish Community Coronavirus Response Fund just a few months ago, our community has raised $4.4 million to help those most directly impacted by the pandemic, and facilitated 1,213 grants to individuals and families suffering from COVID-19-related health and economic challenges. This week, Federation allocated a new round of emergency funding to ensure that even during these challenging times, thousands of community members will remain connected to one another and to vibrant Jewish life. Together, we have taken incredible steps towards caring for our community. But, of course, there remains much work to be done.

Federation & Secure Community Network: Continued Collaboration to Secure our Community
Over the past several months, as many individuals and organizations have continued to work remotely, Federation’s security team, in partnership with Secure Community Network, has been actively addressing local safety and security needs. Regional Security Advisor, Robert Graves, and Deputy Regional Security Advisor, Chris Usher, have continued their daily work with synagogues, JCCs, and other community institutions as those organizations adapt to the COVID-19 environment, including advising on how and when to reopen safely. As we head into the fall, Robert notes that, “now is a good time for organizations to evaluate and update their safety, security, and emergency plans.” To set up an assessment, consultation, or training for your organization, contact Robert or Chris.

Families with young children, this one is for you! PJ Library and Federation present the Summer at Home Family Fun Guide, which highlights ideas for family fun to get you through a summer like no other. It is a true paradox that there is both “nothing to do” and too much out there to sort through. We are here to help!

Meet Local Heroes Rotem Ur and Idan Sharon, two of Federation's Community Shlichim
When synagogues began to close their buildings and cancel in-person programming due to COVID-19, Rotem, Idan, and their nine fellow shlichim, knew they had to adapt their work to a new reality. In mid-March, Rotem, the shlicha for Shaare Torah, led the way by concepting Life: Online, a series of Jewish- and Israeli-themed digital programs and online events. Idan, shaliach for Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation, had been teaching Hebrew online, and was familiar with facilitating programs on the internet. He joined forces with Rotem to bring Life: Online...online. Today, Life: Online has engaged more than 4,400 participants and has created new connections to Israel and Israelis within the Greater Washington Jewish community than ever before.
