A Season of Milestones and Gratitude |
The Mizzou Mafia grew by 74 this winter as the Missouri School of Journalism celebrated commencement on Dec. 20 in Jesse Auditorium. Graduates were joined by family, friends and alumni, including Melissa Farlow, MA ’94, who returned to campus as the alumni speaker to mark the occasion.
As the year comes to a close, we are grateful for the continued support of alumni and friends who make it possible to educate the next generation of journalists and strategic communicators. It’s been a busy and impactful few months. Read on to see how the J-School continues to lead the industry forward.

Paanii Annan, BJ ’14, returned to campus to speak with students about his experiences as brand director for Nike and Jordan Brand at acclaimed advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy. Students gained insights into how to succeed in strategic communication and got behind-the-scenes glimpses into the creative process behind major campaigns. A key message was the importance of authenticity amid declining audience interest in slick, highly-produced content.

The J-School has hired industry pioneer Karen Brophy as its Reynolds Chair in Journalism Strategy and Business Operations. Brophy was one of journalism’s first product managers at The New York Times in the late 1990s, and at Hearst and Nexstar she led major digital growth initiatives. Now, Brophy will work to enhance innovation and sustainability across the Missouri News Network newsrooms while creating new opportunities for students to gain valuable experience with technology and product development.

In late September and early October, students took part in the China Open program, which featured access to many of the top-rated men and women in professional tennis. Student reporters were assigned to follow individual athletes as they progressed through the tournament and were often able to interview them one-on-one for stories that appeared on the tournament’s official website. At the same time, others filled roles in social media and PR at the global sporting event.

Senior Nathan Lee has followed up a national Hearst win earlier this year with a prestigious Kaplan Fellowship, which will send him to the ABC News Washington Bureau this spring along with a $10,000 stipend. Lee will hold a full-time, paid, semester-long position at the bureau while rotating through a variety of roles, gathering hands-on experience in the nation’s capital. For Lee, the honor is the realization of a long-held goal—he’s had his eye on the fellowship since freshman year.
