Camps and Competitions Help Build Interest in STEM

Camps, competitions and contests can have a profound impact on students and how they experience STEM education. STEM competitions such as Kenilworth's Math and Coding Olympiad held this weekend (featured above with speaker Kenneth Campbell from New Schools BR) and the "Girls Design for Good" event scheduled later this month, are often interdisciplinary, drawing upon knowledge, skills, and talents to accomplish a challenge. STEM competitions teach students to work both individually and with others and allow students to explore fascinating fields such as robotics, coding, and game design, while gaining valuable critical thinking skills. The value of competitions is clearly depicted in Disney+ documentary, More Than Robots - which tells the story of a FIRST Robotics team that was challenged to succeed during the pandemic. Be on the outlook for the many opportunities that are available locally and nationally for students to compete.

GIRLS DESIGN 4 GOOD

Register by April 20

WHO: Capital Region teams or individual girls in grades 8-12.

WHAT: FREE competitive engineering design challenge. Girls will engage with professionals from the community and college students enrolled in technology and engineering disciplines. Opening speaker will feature Dr. K Renee Horton, the founder of Unapologetically Being, Inc., a nonprofit for advocacy and mentoring in STEM and serves as a quality Engineer for NASA in New Orleans.

4 fun-filled and hands-on STEM sessions during Spring Break is being offered by BR STEM. Sessions such as the "math of football" and "science of basketball," will take place from 10am to 12pm at the Chaneyville Community Center. Register!

Coding Camp for 9th Grade Girls

This FREE coding camp for 9th grade girls (22-23 school year) will be held July 11-15 from 9am-3pm daily) . The camp will feature both coding activities led by experienced female software developers and explore diverse opportunities available to women who code.
