US Supreme Court Ruling in Favor of Cox Protects Internet Access
|
The US Supreme Court ruled that internet service provider (ISP) Cox is not liable for secondary copyright infringement for the online activities of its users based on the facts of the case Cox v. Sony. Had the court ruled otherwise, ISPs could have faced either terminating their customers’ internet access or paying billion-dollar statutory damages—putting internet access for millions at stake. ARL Statement on Reintroduction of Pro Codes Act
|
ARL continues to oppose the Protecting and Enhancing Public Access to Codes (Pro Codes) Act, which would grant private entities exclusive copyright ownership over elements of the law. The Pro Codes Act would reverse a foundational legal principle that once a standard or code is incorporated by reference into law, it enters the public domain. Read our statement on the act. »
