Acts 4:8-13
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!  If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed,  then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.  Jesus is
‘the stone you builders rejected,
    which has become the cornerstone.’
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

New International Version (NIV)
When I was growing up, my mom could tell which friends I had spent time with.  Some brought out the best in me, and others not so much.  She was a believer in Paul’s words, “Do not be misled.  Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33).  If bad company corrupts good morals, what does good company do?  What if people could tell by the way we act and speak what kind of company we have been keeping.  Can our companions really change our character?

I only ask because after Peter and John were arrested for healing the lame man, Peter preached.  When he preached about Jesus being the only Savior of the world, the religious authorities noticed that Peter and John were unschooled, ordinary and very bold.  Wait,  Are these the same two men who were scattered at Gethsemane?  Is this the same Simon Peter who denied Jesus three times on the night before the crucifixion?  Yes.  What could account for the transformation?  Jesus.  The authorities recognized that these two former fishermen had been with Jesus.

What would today be like if we started by spending time with Jesus?  It would be wonderful if the people around us tried to figure out who we are and finally decided, “They found courage and boldness because they had been with Jesus.”  With my friend Mike Glenn I wonder if the world doesn’t wonder about us because we have lost our connection with Jesus.  He wrote, “When the church discovers Jesus again, the world will discover the church again.”  Let’s spend time thinking about Jesus and talking to Jesus today.  I am confident that being in Jesus’ good company will transform us to become like him.  When that happens, someone, somewhere will notice.
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for the courage of Peter and John.  Help us to lean our elbows on the windowsill of heaven today to get a long look.  Help us to turn our eyes upon Jesus and look full in his wonderful face.  Please let the things of earth grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
Our 2022 Every Day with Jesus readings will cover the whole Bible in one year.  Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
We would love for you to join us as we read through the Bible this year. In addition, I will continue my long-standing practice of reading one Psalm a day through the year.  As we journal together this year, Highlight a verse that stands out to you, Explain what it means, Apply that truth to your life and Respond to what you’ve read with an action or prayer.
Joyfully,
Duane
