During this time when the words "distancing" and "apart" are uttered so often, Father Ryan has believed even more strongly in the word "connected."  Our community is large and their hopes for their children, and all of Ryan Nation, remain high.  They want to stay connected to this exceptional place.
This publication, sent each Friday to our parents, including the parents of the incoming class of 2024, is an important part of that connection.  Through it, we are providing information about events, news of student accomplishments, and insights into this Digital Learning environment.  Most importantly, we are providing those important Irish ties that truly bind us all.
Your support in so many ways makes this publication a reality; it makes these connections stronger.  So we welcome you to Ryan Connections.  It comes with our prayers for all in our community, and with our thanks.

A Beautiful May Crowning

This first day of May brought not only a glorious spring morning but a beautiful May Crowning.
Following his daily Mass, Father Mark Simpson processed to the grotto with the monstrance and invited Kenna Braeuner '20, brought onto campus for this special occasion, to crown our Blessed Mother.
With this simple gesture, Father and Kenna, on behalf of the entire Father Ryan community, rededicated the campus to Mary and our Lord. As we begin Our Blessed Mother's month, we ask for her intercession, today and every day, for peace and healing in our city, our nation and our world.
The May Crowning and today’s Mass can be found at: fatherryan.org/mass.

A Psych Test: Staying Connected While Apart

It would make sense that in a time of great upheaval and uncertainty, a person’s psychological state would be a bit out of sorts. Now add in the Digital Learning environment and even the process of teaching a course on Psychology becomes more challenging. For Psychology teacher and football and track and field coach Mr. Scott Shaver, this challenge was real.
Coach Shaver’s overall goal was to maintain the focus on the students continuing to think on a deep level, a challenge since the class is a discussion-oriented model based on an application process. That means that the students learn concepts and then apply them to scenarios, both fictional and factual, for a deeper understanding.  How was he going to continue this type of learning?
“So much of what makes our Psychology course successful is the students,” Coach Shaver said. “I was worried about my ability to stay connected and engaged with them. But I quickly discovered how amazing these students would be in the process.”
Microsoft Teams sessions are offered twice a day to discuss content via PowerPoint and delivered in a manner that would be consistent to being in the classroom. According to Coach Shaver, the students have embraced the discussion model by creating scenarios for application of concepts. They have also interacted over the digital discussion platform within myFatherRyan. Coach Shaver added, “there have been numerous instances of students interacting with each other in this platform that has reminded me so much of how they would be in Room 239.”
One of the things that has made the course so enjoyable is the students’ approaches to the current situation. “They are very disappointed, but it is important for me to point out that they all have chosen the path of positivity in dealing with this predicament that we are all in," said Coach Shaver. He cited a recent class where Taylor Erickson '20 shared an article she wrote on her own that expanded on what they talked about in their last class. “Listening to her share the information literally brought me to tears. Just another of many examples that I have experienced of my kids taking full advantage of the opportunity to keep learning despite this situation.”

Senior Wrestler Gets All-State Nod

Anthony Wright '20 was selected by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association to their 2020 All-State Wrestling Team for his achievements this year.
Anthony capped his wrestling season with a 3rd place finish in the DII State Tournament. Congratulations, Anthony!
Go Anthony and Go Irish!

Moina Day is Coming!

The newsstands are making room as the editorial staff at one of Father Ryan’s oldest institutions is wrapping up its annual year-end issue. The Moina has been informing and entertaining the Irish community since 1927, and this pandemic isn’t stopping the presses.
Mr. Puryear, the Moina’s faculty advisor, said that the stories are coming together well and that the issue will be larger than normal.  It’s all part of our young journalists’ continuing development and an opportunity to cover Father Ryan High School's response in this historic time. Listen for the cry of “Moina Day” later in May.

Lights Come Up on the Senior Class

You’ve probably seen the social posts each Tuesday night at 8:20 – 20:20 military time – with the campus illuminated as a salute to the Class of 2020. Principal Paul Davis '81 is the light-keeper, visiting the campus each Tuesday night to turn on the lights and lead Ryan Nation’s salute to our seniors.  It’s a powerful and simple way of letting our community know how special these seniors are. Go Class of 2020!

Admissions is Open!

Father Ryan’s Admissions Team is busy working closely with all of the new families who have made the decision to call Father Ryan home. They are also ready to talk to anyone who is interested in exploring the opportunities for their children at Father Ryan.
If you or anyone you know needs to talk with our Admissions team, visit them at: fatherryan.org/admissions.

Saluting our Irish Heroes

There are countless heroes throughout our community, providing support, care and essential services to help those battling the COVID-19 and everyone in our community who is dealing with the safer-at-home environment.
We are saluting a number of Irish Heroes on social media each week, including a number of first responders in our community, such as Hunter Ellen '96, Zach Mayo '97, Mekenzie (Brown) Pittard '11, Karen Scott and Drew Smith '92.
You can nominate an Irish Hero online at: fatherryan.org/hero.

Stay Connected with Digital Learning

We know that our connections keep us together in a variety of ways. Here are some examples:
Irish Foodies – Supporting our Irish Foodies is important, not just to keep us fed but to keep many of these businesses in business. We encourage you to plan a meal from any of the area Irish Foodies restaurants listed here. We want to continue to enjoy their menus for years to come.
Upcoming Events – Since our beautiful campus will remain closed and digital learning will continue through the end of the school year, a number of planned events, including Graduation and Baccalaureate Mass have been rescheduled. We have put together an updated calendar for the remainder of the year. You can access it here; we’ll be updating it as the spring continues.
Social Media – Be sure you're following us on social media, and encourage your children to follow Campus Ministry on Instagram for news on their activities.

The Father Ryan Impact

“Will you be mailing diplomas to our seniors?”
It was a simple question, innocently asked by one of our parents during this past Wednesday’s Irish Webinar.  In among the various interruptions that have marked the last seven weeks at Father Ryan, this parent was curious how the physical marker of a completed education would be presented this year.
As I prepared to answer the question, I thought about what a diploma signifies, the dignity and solemnity with which we award them to our graduates, and I found it difficult to speak. I was struck with an image that I myself am not ready to recognize as a possibility. It wasn’t that I didn’t know an answer; it was the thought of that final act between Father Ryan and these students not happening that made me emotional. The delivery of a Father Ryan diploma on behalf of all of Ryan Nation, past and present, is one of the most significant responsibilities that Mr. Davis and I have as leaders of the school.  With that comes great joy for both the recipient and those of us delivering the diplomas to them.
The Father Ryan diploma is an honored document, representing achievement, commitment and dedication, both to the academic process and to the legacy of Father Ryan.  It reflects hours in the classroom and in the hallways in the pursuit of faith, knowledge and service. It embodies powerful relationships between a caring faculty and young men and women, eager to learn and to seek their fullest potential spiritually and physically as well.   Perhaps most importantly, it represents a commitment to and confidence in Catholic education by our entire parent community.
Hearing the questions from the more than 150 senior parents who joined this week’s webinar reminded me of the love you and I and all our parents have for our children and our faculty.  Each of us has committed ourselves to the unique ministry at Father Ryan, knowing that it is in that ministry that our children are formed in lives of excellence.  In these unusual times, we hold on to that commitment even more, and we embrace the symbols and touchpoints of a Father Ryan education.  Thank you for your commitment.
The Father Ryan diploma has been earned by more than 13,000 graduates over our school’s history.  It has been earned by the graduates of the Class of 2020.  And we will be certain to present diplomas to this outstanding class.
Please know too that as this school year draws to a less than “normal” close, we are already planning for the 2020-2021 school year.  Our plan as of now is to be on campus in August with our faculty and students delivering on our mission “to be a living example of the Gospel while helping students reach their full potential.”  As we learn more about the current crisis and as a return to everyday life emerges in consultation with local authorities and our diocese, we will communicate plans for our start in August to all of our community.
As we begin May, the month honoring our Blessed Mother, we ask for her intercession for the healing of all those affected by this virus, and for her blessings on all in our wonderful Father Ryan community.
Peace,
Jim McIntyre
President
