Live at the Dietrich - by Margie Young

Porcelain War was featured in the Dietrich's Spring 2025 Film Festival.

"Ukraine is like porcelain - easy to break, but impossible to destroy." This is the message of the Spring Film Festival movie Porcelain War, a war movie of actual footage of the warfare, a film that helps us understand the love of country and culture that inspire the Ukrainians to keep fighting. If you missed it at the Dietrich, try to stream it, because it is a very different war movie. Our Spring Fest is over, but we only have to wait until June 26 for Summer Fest Preview Day to usher in another feast of foreign and independent films from July 11 to July 31.
Erica Rogler, our Executive Director, just shared with me that cultural events like film festivals have a significant economic impact on communities like ours. According to the Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 report, arts organizations drive local commerce by employing people, purchasing goods, and attracting tourists. Arts attendees spend an average of $38.46 per person on meals, shopping, and lodging, benefiting local businesses. Arts travelers stay longer and spend more, with one-third traveling from outside the county and spending an average of $60.57. In 2022, the arts contributed $73.3 billion to the national economy, supporting 1.6 million jobs. I see this play out in my life. So often after catching a film festival movie or any number of cultural events at the Dietrich, my friends and I often visit local eateries for a meal to continue the fun and catch up.
Our new Summer Events and Classes brochure will be at the theater or in your mailboxes soon, but in the meantime check out all the special offerings at our new website at www.dietrichtheater.com. Come experience A Blues Rock Revival, a live concert featuring Lone Crow Rebellon & the Jukehouse Bombers on Sunday, May 18 at 6:00 p.m. Expect high-voltage performances with original music. Call us at 570-836-1022 x3 to reserve tickets at $20. Tickets will also be available at the door.
At our Open Mic on Friday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. the featured performers are our very own Veterans Connecting Meetup and Workshop members. I never miss this special opportunity. Come and hear original works read by the veterans themselves - a very special way to honor them and understand how their experience has impacted them - a way for us to connect with them.
We are always so pleased to welcome back Jay Steveskey, classical guitarist, this time joined by cellist, Jeff McAuley, on Sunday, June 1 at 3:00 p.m. This is a free concert, sponsored by John Keker in memory of Jessie Reppy Keker. featuring French and Spanish composers and music from Argentina and Brazil. It will be the first time this duo has performed on our stage. Call the number above to reserve free tickets or just come and get your tickets at the door. Bring your family and friends for a very special experience.
The Dietrich Theater Radio Players are rehearsing now for their next performance on Tuesday, June 3 at 7:00 p.m. Next time I will tell you more about the plays they will perform. Meanwhile mark your calendar now. This is another truly unique adventure back to the days when radio was our main entertainment. Our performers are superb, dressed in 1940's costumes, and the tickets are free.
As I write this column. It is raining again. Have we had enough rain yet? But the sun is always shining inside the Dietrich. So many ways to lift us up and inspire us. You are invited and we can't wait to see you.
