Dear Faculty, Administrators and Staff,
One of our goals this year is to promote research excellence among our students at Seton Hall. I would like to highlight one such opportunity for student scholars of all disciplines to showcase their research at the Annual Conference of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 12, 2024. We will support a select number of student researchers (for a maximum of 3 posters) with a Student Travel Award to present their poster at the conference.
The MSCHE Conference is attended by the leadership of colleges and universities across the region. Although the MSCHE Conference focuses on current topics in higher education, the student poster session invites students across all disciplines to present their research findings to leaders in academia. What better way to share the exciting work our students are engaged in under the mentorship of our dedicated faculty?
Please encourage your students to read more about last year’s recipients here. To apply for the award, students should complete a brief application by September 25, 2024. Research topics may relate to the conference theme, "Protecting the Future: Champions for Higher Education" or may be any topic related to the student's field of study. Priority will be given to projects that demonstrate research excellence at Seton Hall, particularly those nearing completion or previously presented at other venues.
We look forward to learning more about the exciting work of our students and faculty!

Tips for Faculty to Increase Retention
Research shows that student interaction with faculty is key to student success and retention. Here are some best practices (adapted from the 2023 Student Voice Survey and Utah Tech University, 2024) on how faculty can continue to positively enhance the student experience.
Tip #1 Learn and Use Student's Names. Using student's names helps them to feel included and valued. The photo roster in Banner/ Canvas can help match names and faces. Greeting students by name as they enter class, using name plates, or creating icebreaker activities enhances the classroom experience.
Tip #2: Encourage Class Attendance. Active participation makes a difference in the classroom experience. Some faculty make attendance or class participation part of their final grade. Use Compass to report students who are not attending class so advisors can connect with them.
