FGNA Volunteer Profile: Fariya Doctor
Fariya Doctor is a Niagara, Ontario based Feldenkrais® practitioner who comes to the profession via massage and a BSc. in Science. She graduated from her (Toronto) Feldenkrais training in 2004.
Fariya’s professionalism and participation in FGNA conferences led to the FGNA leadership to nominate Fariya to the Board of Directors. She became a director elect, and in July 2015 she accepted the position of secretary. She has since become an active and ubiquitous FGNA leader.
Although she didn’t expect that it would, Fariya’s board work helped her grow professionally. FGNA Board projects put her in regular contact with practitioners in the U.S. and Canada. These connections, with those she made by attending FGNA conferences, grew into a cross-region network of clients and colleagues for Fariya. In a commitment to her Feldenkrais community during the pandemic shut downs, Fariya founded and led the popular FGNA Cafe, which continues to serve various needs of fellow Feldenkrais practitioners.
Fariya is modest in describing her accomplishments and service commitment. “I’ve always volunteered, since I was in the massage profession.” She admits “I had a steep learning curve when it came to the secretarial role for FGNA.” But to Fariya it just seemed like the right thing to do to meet the needs of the organization. “It is my conviction that if I want to make a difference in a profession I am proud of, the best way to do it is to dive in and lend a hand.”

Feldenkrais® Practitioners working in health care
Dear Feldenkrais colleague,
If you are a Feldenkrais Practitioner working in healthcare and would like to be part of a special interest group of healthcare providers who are Feldenkrais practitioners, please email us at feldyjutta@gmail.com
As health care providers, we are able to offer this precious somatic and experiential work to our clients. At the same time, we might experience challenges having to adhere to the parameters of medical approach. We want to learn more about your practice.
We will be providing a survey soon to determine if and how Feldenkrais practitioners are bringing aspects of the Feldenkrais Method® into their clinical practice. If not, then what are the barriers to integrating Feldenkrais into their clinical practice. From this survey we hope to better understand the breadth of interdisciplinary applications of the Feldenkrais Method.

Spotlight on Legislative Advocacy
Legislative activity is ramping up!
Kansas: SB 111 was introduced and assigned to committee in January. This is similar to a bill from the previous session, that would establish massage therapy licensure requirements and exempt the practice of the Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education and other non-massage professions. FGNA was involved in drafting the exemption language, and supports the bill.
Massachusetts: HD3807 and SD2151 were filed in January. The bills would remove exemptions and require licensure for “alternative healing therapies”, which would include practice of the Feldenkrais Method and many other non-massage professions. We’ve successfully opposed similar bills since 2016.
FGNA Government Relations Administrator Andrea Wiener is organizing a meeting with the Attorney General’s staff and representatives of the Joint Government Relations Committee (“JGRC”) of the Federation of Therapeutic Massage, Bodywork and Somatic Practice Organizations (“Federation MBS”, to discuss our concerns. Andrea will work closely with JGRC representatives, FGNA Massachusetts Government Relations Liaison Misha Forrester, and members to plan strategy and prepare testimony in opposition to the bills.
HD.953 and SD.1365 were filed in January. These Health Freedom bills protect the right to provide complementary and alternative health care services. FGNA supports the bills.
Minnesota: HF 973 and SF 967 were introduced and assigned to committee in January. These are similar to bills from the previous session, that would establish massage therapy licensure requirements, and exempt the practice of the Feldenkrais Method and other non-massage professions. FGNA was involved in drafting the exemption language, and supports the bill.
