Congratulations to Drs. Dumm and Zaydman on their recent publication in J. Clinical Microbiology (doi: 10.1128/jcm.01510-25). Their collaborative project, funded in part by a P&I SPARK award, demonstrated how retrospective mining of laboratory quality control (QC) data together with systematic review of other patient clinical data identified a subtle shift in overall antimicrobial susceptibility reporting in E. faecium and other clinical isolates, which was otherwise undetectable through routine laboratory QC processes. Their findings highlight an important example of how integrating multimodal patient data analysis into microbiology QC practices may enhance detection of subtle but clinically relevant changes in the performance of antimicrobial susceptibility testing, ultimately leading to changes in antimicrobial prescribing.
