Student Employment Month is just around the corner!
April is Student Employment Month, an annual opportunity to affirm the importance of student work on campus, and emphasize its impact on our campus community and on the educational and career development of college students.
Now is the time to begin thinking about what you will do to celebrate and recognize the student employees in your department. Need some ideas? We've compiled some suggestions.
At March's Gather{Round}, supervisors discussed student recognition in preparation for Student Employment Month - one theme that ultimately emerged was the value of personalization, be that a note celebrating and expressing gratitude for specific contributions, a custom snack-pack of students' favorite treats, or a team activity you know that they love (the student staff team here in CES love to play board games, so we'll definitely be incorporating that into our celebration this year).
We're looking forward to celebrating the work of student staff alongside you!
Join us at Iced Coffee & Affirmations to celebrate student employees!
The CES Student Employment team will be in the Wheelock Lobby on April 12 showing gratitude for the work of student employees at our Iced Coffee & Affirmations event. We'll be there from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. serving up iced coffee and reading affirmations to student staff.
Here's where we need your help:
- Make sure your student staff know about the event! On April 12, send your student staff our way.
-
Sign up to staff the event and read affirmations to student staff. You can even let you student staff know when you will be working so that they can come get an affirmation from you!

We will be hosting our second annual Gathering of the Supervisors in April! We've been working hard to put together a panel and workshop on important student employment topics, and we are very much looking forward to gathering with supervisors from across campus to enjoy food, exchange ideas, and celebrate the work you do to support students.

The Gathering of the Supervisors
Tuesday, April 18
9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Tahoma Room (TMS 363)

This general meeting for all supervisors of student staff will incorporate two main topics this year:
Supporting Every Student’s Success in Campus Employment: A panel discussion
In our work to support student staff members and create workplaces where students can bring their whole selves to work, it’s important to consider how each individual’s experience of success in their job is impacted by their lived experiences and identities.
This panel discussion about supervision will explore how to support students who identify as first-generation, experiencing food insecurity/financial hardship, struggling with mental health, and students who see themselves underrepresented on campus (race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, religion), and prompts us to think about how we can supervise in a way that promotes success for all students.
Communicating Expectations and Giving Feedback (with Prof. Amy Spivey from Physics and the Center for Writing & Learning)
In this part of the program, we will talk about strategies for communicating expectations, building rapport, and providing both positive and constructive feedback to student employees.
Professor Spivey will offer some ideas to consider and provide time for participants to talk to each other about how the ideas might be applicable and relevant in their departments.

Your RSVP will only take a few minutes and will help us to plan our catering order appropriately!

Can I give gifts as a part of Student Employment Month? Yes! There's nothing that prevents you from giving gifts as a part of Student Employment Month, whether that's a a zero-cost gift like a handwritten, personalized note, or a small gift that utilizes department funds, like a yummy treat or care package.
However, keep in mind that university funds may not be used to purchase and give gift cards to student employees, as gift cards are viewed as income and must be taxed.
For questions about what funds are allocated for student staff appreciation during Student Employment Month, please refer to the budget manager in your department.

Grab a moment, wherever you can find it, to say hi and check in with your student staff members.
Ask your student staff: What have you accomplished in this job this year and what are you proud of?
BENEFIT: Students have an opportunity to reflect on their growth and identify moments of pride and accomplishment, which fosters a sense of purpose and the belief that their work is valuable.
Follow up: Have you written, yet, about these accomplishments on your resume where you describe this job? Would you like my support in doing that?
BENEFIT: Encouraging your student staff member to keep their resume up to date with a meaningful description of their work supports their success in finding future employment. You can help them articulate a description of their work and accomplishments, or encourage them to make an appointment with a Career Advisor in CES to update their resume. We also love to do programs for student staff teams about resumes - you can complete a Program Request Form to ask us to visit your team.

Did you know that student staff provide about 20% of non-faculty staffing on campus? Students perform critical work functions across the university - we would not be able to do what we do without them!
