Biological sciences professor Nicky Anthony and her post-doctoral student Courtney Miller published a paper on tiny tropical puddle frogs showing that protecting genetic variation is essential for animals to survive the climate crisis. The scientists sampled 191 frogs across a range of different locations and habitats, extracting DNA and mapping the occurrence of different variants.

Professor Earns $345,000 Grant to Monitor Vegetation in Coastal Louisiana |
University of New Orleans professor Maddie Foster-Martinez is the recipient of a two-year $345,000 grant from the RESTORE Act Center of Excellence - The Water Institute. Through funding from fines and penalties in the wake of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, these grants fund research that directly supports planning and implementation of Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan.

Tumulesh Solanky, a professor and chair of mathematics at the University of New Orleans, is the winner of the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Statistics at the University of Connecticut. Solanky earned his doctorate in statistics from UConn in 1990.

Robert Mahon, assistant professor in the earth and environmental sciences department has a new publication titled "Timescales of Autogenic Noise in River Bedform Evolution and Stratigraphy" in Geophysical Research Letters. The work was a collaboration between UNO and UCSB researchers, supported by an NSF EPSCoR RII Track 4 Fellowship, LA Board of Regents Support Fund, UNO and UCSB New Faculty Startup, and the American Chemical Society.

Two COS Students Participated in Prestigious Summer Research Program |
University of New Orleans College of Sciences students Hailie Goldthorpe and Chloe Renzi participated in the 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Program at UMass Chan Medical School, refining their career goals through networking with peers and mentors, collaborative research and developing critical thinking skills. Only 30 students from around the country were selected to participate, representing 23 universities.
