SPRING 2017 FINAL EXAMS

Spring 2017 final exam schedules have been posted.
Students are asked to double-check the schedule in order to determine whether or not they have a conflict. A conflict is defined as two exams scheduled at the same time or four exams scheduled in one day. Please report any conflicts to the Principal’s Office.
As always, during final exam days, students are required to be present only during the times they have exams. It is always difficult to find alternative times to take final exams and often it has a detrimental effect on a student’s performance on the exam. Therefore, we ask families to please make every effort to schedule around final exams so that all students are present at their assigned exam times.
If you have any questions about finals scheduling please contact Shani Simonson in the Principal’s Office at ssimonson@brebeuf.org.

Loves About Brebeuf
I know it is said all the time, but what makes Brebeuf so special is the connections students are able to make with teachers. Being able to talk and joke around with them whenever I want to makes their class more enjoyable, and therefore, I learn more.
Favorite Class
I can't choose one, so I'll choose four: Precalculus/AP Calculus A with Mr. Elliott, AP Physics 1 with Mr. Rott, AP Government with Mr. Kantz, and Religion and Science with Mr. King. I already had a love for math and science, but Mr. Elliott and Mr. Rott made class so enjoyable with their enthusiasm and humor. I did not expect to enjoy government, but Mr. Kantz makes the class very interesting and I am beginning to appreciate and understand politics more. Our discussions in Religion and Science on almost anything from the Big Bang theory to space were amazing and I broadened my understanding of science to a more theoretical way of looking at things.
Future Plans
I will be attending Purdue University to study engineering and plan on joining an orchestra and the Women in Engineering Club.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Rowing
Indianapolis Youth Chorale
Band
Math Club
National Honor Society (NHS)
Admissions Ambassador

Random Facts
My happy place is Eagle Creek and I go there to hike or hammock anytime I get, even during the school day at times.
I love traveling and have been various places in Europe and a couple of national parks. My favorites have been Switzerland, the fjords of Norway, and Zion National Park.
What has been your favorite Brebeuf experience or most memorable moment so far?
Going on, and then leading Kairos has been my favorite experience during high school. While the other retreats are great, Kairos really takes it to a whole new level and pushes you to grow as a person and in all of your relationships, while making lasting friendships at the same time. It was especially memorable to lead Kairos 100, MAW’s (Mary Ann Wallace) last Kairos, and to witness the end of an amazing tenure.
As a senior, what advice do you have for all the new Braves in the Class of 2021?
To really enjoy every moment of high school, even freshman year, because it flies by faster than you can imagine.
How did you get into hammocking?
Many people bring hammocks to regattas and I initially saw them there and wanted to get one. As I started going to Eagle Creek outside of practice, I realized that it is a great place to hammock and now keep it in my car for impromptu trips. I am also definitely bringing it with me to college to hammock on the quad on nice days.

Non-profit Erika's Lighthouse Provides Talking Points for and Resources for Parents

There has been much talk about the new Netflix show 13 Reasons Why around the halls of Brebeuf Jesuit over the last few weeks.  If you are not familiar with it, the show is based on the novel by Jay Asher and tells the story of a high school student who takes her own life.  Although it is rated TV-MA, meaning that it is not intended for children under 17, we know that many of our students have been making their way through the thirteen episodes and there is much buzz about it.
Erika’s Lighthouse is a non-profit organization based out of Chicago dedicated to educating and raising awareness on teen depression.  Each year, all students are presented a class period of depression education through a curriculum provided by Erika’s Lighthouse by School Social Worker Libby Pollak.  The focus is continuing to get our students more and more comfortable discussing mental health issues in an effort to encourage them to ask for help for themselves or a friend if needed.  By graduation, Brebeuf Jesuit students should all be familiar with the signs, symptoms, and treatments for depression, the resources available to them, as well as ways to practice, support, and promote good mental health through positive coping skills.
This week, Erika’s Lighthouse sent out a letter with talking points for parents to discuss 13 Reasons Why with their kids that I think is a great guide to discussing not just the show but important topic of suicide with your teens at home.
If you ever have any questions, concerns, or would like help finding local mental health resources for your teen, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Libby Pollak at lpollak@brebeuf.org or 317.524.7087.
