| Hello, Gaucho parents and families!
We hope this newsletter finds your family safe, healthy and ready for the start of a new academic year. Even though the majority of UCSB students will experience the University in a remote context this quarter, there are many fall kick-off events and opportunities taking place for virtual student engagement and support. This newsletter will provide an overview of these events and where to learn more, an update on COVID-19 campus protocols, and resources for supporting your student in their online learning experience.

Building Community: Week of Welcome Events
These are just a few of the annual Week of Welcome traditions that are happening virtually this year. A full calendar of virtual campus events can be found on Shoreline - UCSB’s Official Student Engagement Platform.

UCSB’s first Virtual Campus Involvement Fair is being held on Monday, September 28 from 4-5:30pm on Shoreline. Students can register from their UCSB Shoreline account, on the UCSB Shoreline app, or at the RSVP link. This event will be offered a second time later in fall quarter (date TBA).

The annual UCSB Cultural Identities Fair, happening on Tuesday, September 29 from 12:30-2pm, is a series of virtual socials for the UCSB community to connect with others who share their identity. Focused around cultural identities, this fair will include sections for the following: Asian/Pacific Islander, African Diaspora, American Indian & Indigenous Peoples, Chicanx/Latinx - Bienvenida, Jewish, International, Middle Eastern, and Multiracial. Students can register from their UCSB Shoreline account, on the UCSB Shoreline app, or at the RSVP link.

Virtual New Student Convocation: Tuesday, September 29, 3-4pm
UC Santa Barbara will continue the tradition of welcoming our incoming undergraduate students to the experience of higher education during our Virtual New Student Convocation. This event constitutes a key component of broader campus efforts to communicate to students the values of a UC Santa Barbara education, and the excitement of becoming part of our campus community. Our New Student Convocation is the University’s official induction ceremony for new students and the only campus ceremony for the entering class until Commencement.

Students are also invited to attend the Virtual Fun & Fitness Festival on Wednesday, September 30 from 10am-4pm on Shoreline. Students can register from their UCSB Shoreline account, on the UCSB Shoreline app, or at the RSVP link.

Supporting Your Student's Online Learning
Parents and family members play an important role in supporting students during their academic journey. This is especially true as students navigate online learning. The Keep Learning UCSB website provides resources for parents and families to assist in your efforts to support your students as they pursue their studies through remote instruction at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 Updates & Campus Protocols
Community Compact and Learning Module
All students have received information about the required COVID-19 learning module via their University email. The module culminates with a Community Compact in which students must agree to abide by current health guidelines and campus protocols. Please encourage your Gaucho to complete the module as soon as possible!
Community Safety Promise
UCSB is asking every student to make the Community Safety Promise, created by UCSB student leaders and focused on the health and safety of all community members. We encourage you to engage your student in a conversation on how they intend to take an active role in promoting safety practices. More information about the Community Safety Promise will be sent to students via their University email.

UCSB Community Safety Promise
As a member of the UCSB community, I recognize how my individual actions affect our community.
In commitment to the health and safety of myself and my fellow community members, I promise to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by following best practices.
I promise to:
- Protect myself and others by wearing a face covering as well as practicing physical distancing, social distancing, and good hygiene.
- Stay informed of the developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in our community and how I can actively prevent its spread by checking the UCSB COVID-19 Portal.
- Monitor myself for COVID-19 symptoms and if necessary seek medical guidance from UCSB Student Health or other medical professionals.
By promising to abide by all of these best practices, I am taking an active role in the betterment of our community.
We all love UCSB. In order to return to the vibrant campus community we miss so much, we all must do our part to keep our community safe.
This promise was created in 2020 by UCSB Student Leaders.

| Flu Vaccination Clinic
Beginning November 1, 2020, the UC Office of the President is making influenza vaccinations mandatory for all faculty, staff and students who will be working, living or learning on a UC campus anytime during the 2020-21 flu season.
The University is holding a flu vaccination clinic on campus Wednesday, September 30 - Wednesday, October 7 (weekdays only) from 9am to 5pm. Any faculty, staff member or student can receive a flu shot at no charge to them. Appointments are required and students will need their Perm number when making an appointment.
