Studio Block Close Up: Digital Photography

Students in Matt Cavanaugh's Digital Photography class used a beautiful fall day to capture images on campus. Matt photographed them (L), and they photographed the foliage. Here's a great shot taken by a student.

2018-2019 ANNUAL FUND GIVING

As you know, The Academy relies on the generosity of families, friends and alumni/ae to support programs, faculty, and financial aid. Every gift makes a difference and every gift matters.

Parent donations in particular inspire others to give, and we ask that our current families make their gifts or pledges before October 15 in an effort to reach 100% participation this year. Please return the gift/pledge card that you received in the mail and contact the development office with any questions. Thank you!

Classroom Close Up: Climate Connections

Sixth and seventh grade students frequently use their double block of "C Squared" on Fridays to visit local sites connected to their studies in science, geography and English. Recently they traveled to the William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington, and the Hawley Bog.

We are seek volunteer parent artists to donate their time to The Academy Studio Block program by teaching classes. SPORTS RECAP, WEEK OF OCTOBER 15th

On Monday, the JV co-ed soccer team traveled to Williamstown to play Pine Cobble School and won their fourth straight game, 8-0.  Anders G-B netted the first three goals of the game.  Other scorers included Atticus R (two goals and an assist), Anna P-C (assisted by Julien T C), Ruby C, and Gus G (assisted by Sam B).  Julien T C played a strong game on offense and bravely agreed to tend the goal for the entire second half, while Sam B had his best performance of the season. The lopsided score allowed many Aardvarks to play unfamiliar positions and to work on their passing skills.

The Cross-Country team raced through sleet and rain on a chilly Wednesday afternoon. The boys finished 5th out of 6 teams, and were led by strong runs from Will D (4th), Eli C (13th), Tor O (17th), David A (27th), Izzy S (37th), and Rory S (38th). Aislyn J (3rd), Paloma HS (4th), and Katie T (25th) ran strong races for the girls.

The Varsity Boys Soccer team defeated White Oak 7-3 on Wednesday behind great team play across the board. On Thursday, the boys played an excellent first half against a bigger and stronger Eagle Hill team, who scored three times late in the second half against the Aardvarks. Nat BO scored both Academy goals in the 4-2 loss, while Alex T had a strong game in goal and Tucker ZA and Bennet B anchored the defense.

Girls Varsity Soccer had another tough game for on Thursday with a 4-0 loss against Eagle Hill. Our offense pushed hard in the second half which allowed us to have several great shots on goal. Our defense was nearly unstoppable, as was our goalie. Unfortunately, the opposing team had some great kicks which snuck their way into the goal. Kudos to the team for their indomitable spirit!
The Cross Country team celebrated Rory's birthday after a grueling and wet race
on Wednesday.
Girls Varsity Soccer team members demonstrated their
positive spirit and energy before Thursday's game.

CHARLEMONT FORUM - SPECIAL PRESENTATION
OCTOBER 27 (8 PM)
Three perspectives on Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and1960s, together with thoughts about racism in 2018, will be the theme of a uniquely scheduled autumn Charlemont Forum.

On Saturday, October 27 (7 PM) at the Charlemont Federated Church, activists Josephine Bolling McCall, Karin Kunstler and Neal Goldman will share their stories.  McCall, whose book “The Penalty for Success: My Father was Lynched in Lowndes County, Alabama”, will speak to her family’s experience, one of the 4,000 lynchings which took place in the South over a 75-year period.  McCall currently serves as president of The Elmore Bolling Foundation which she founded in 2008 to preserve the legacy of her father, Elmore Bolling, a black entrepreneur and philanthropist from Lowndesboro, Alabama. Kunstler, daughter of renowned Civil Rights lawyer, William Kuntsler, is Deputy Head of the Charities Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office.   Goldman, Kunstler’s husband, witnessed the Selma marches with Martin Luther King, Jr. at the urging of his father-in-law to be.  After observing the events of ‘Bloody Sunday”, Goldman assisted the U. S. Justice Department in preparing a lawsuit that resulted in federal protection by the National Guard for the subsequent March to Montgomery.

The evening will be moderated by David Specht, local consultant, facilitator and coach.  For more information, contact Academy Trustee Peter Stevens, who is also a member of the Charlemont Forum Committee.

The Challenge: take a blank canvas (a plain cupcake) and create a masterpiece. Each team will be given plain cupcakes and a bag of mystery decorations. It’s up to you to create something special.

Cupcakes will be judged (and eaten) at the Halloween Dance. The winning team will be announced at Morning Meeting on Monday, October 29.

Only those participating in the Cupcake Challenge may stay at school until the dance begins. They will plan and decorate their cupcakes, then watch the live action movie Scooby Doo - Journey to Spooky Island, rated PG.  Participants should bring their costumes for the dance and something for dinner.
