Breaking Down Barriers to Waste Sorting |
Stanford Redwood City, in partnership with the Office of Sustainability, is hosting a Living Lab fellow this year to pilot interventions related to proper waste sorting.
Sarah Paulson, a master’s student in Sustainability Science and Practice, will focus on identifying the key drivers of waste sorting behavior. She will be implementing and testing behavioral interventions on the Redwood City campus to reduce the amount of waste we send to the landfill, increase diversion, and reduce contamination. After piloting at SRWC, Sarah will develop a strategy to take these lessons and scale them for the Stanford campus.
"Getting the chance to see SRWC's recycling processing facility was an eye-opening experience. The manual work that goes into sorting waste in addition to the technology affected me on a personal level. This experience not only revealed to me opportunities to improve this entire process, but also made me reflect on our role as community members in properly sorting our waste to help improve this process," says Sarah on her experience so far.
Sarah will be working under the mentorship of Laura DiMario from SRWC Operations and Angela Vincent and Gretchen Engbring from the Office of Sustainability. To kick off the fellowship, a tour was scheduled of the facility that processes SRWC’s recyclables. Please join us in welcoming Sarah!
