Spotlight: Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center
| |
The Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center (CCBDC) at CHKD provides personalized care to children with cancer, sickle cell disease, and blood disorders. This team of dedicated and highly trained professionals cares for over 500 patients with childhood cancer, 500 patients with sickle cell disease, and 300 patients with coagulation disorders.
The CCBDC is the only federally funded hemophilia treatment center in southeastern Virginia and one of only 141 nationwide. It offers the first sickle cell transition program for teens transferring to adult providers as well as multidisciplinary clinics for sickle cell, neuro-oncology, hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, menorrhagia, and late effects.
To ensure they are providing the most advanced treatment options, CCBDC's research department continuously monitors studies, national clinical trials, and new gene therapies as they become FDA-approved. They are currently developing a program to offer the CAR T-cell therapy Kymriah to patients with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, with the goal of launching in 2024. Physician Education and Announcements
| |
| An Announcement from CHKD Dermatology
Due to high patient volumes and in an effort to better serve the pediatric population, CHKD dermatology will no longer accept new patients aged 18 years or older. However, accommodations for established patients who would be best served in the pediatric dermatology setting will be made on a case-by-case basis.
CHKD dermatology providers will work with established patients ages 18 and up to develop an appropriate plan to make the transition to general dermatology practices as smooth as possible.
