Welcome to October and the next season on campus! The trees are starting to change, the squirrels are burying every acorn they find, and we are treasuring the gorgeous autumn days before the daylight shortens (daylight saving ends Nov. 5). The excitement of September has passed, and now students are facing midterm exams and papers. They may need something to look forward to, and so might you. Remember MSU Family Weekend Presented by MSUFCU! Come to campus, hang out with your student, and catch some of the unique events that can only be experienced during Family Weekend! Don't wait! Registration closes Oct. 20!
Students may also be feeling increased stress, pressure to meet varying expectations, and maybe a little procrastination or lack of motivation. These are normal experiences for this point in the semester. Thinking about next year’s housing, next semester’s enrollment, and potentially getting sick can bring their own stresses. Read on to find out more and have the resources you need when your student reaches out to you. And maybe even keep a couple of those health tips in mind for yourself!
We hope to see you around campus soon.
Take good care,
Laurin

Spring Semester Enrollment
Spring semester course enrollment begins by appointment Oct. 30. Students will receive an email with their enrollment appointment time, which is also viewable in SIS. Advising appointments are not required, but it is recommended students meet with their academic adviser once each semester to ensure they are taking the appropriate courses to progress to graduation. Advising appointments are scheduled through SIS, and most colleges have drop-in advising hours available.
Please remind your student that advising appointments are in high demand the closer the date is to enrollment, so schedule those appointments earlier in the semester to prepare for the next semester’s enrollment. Students are also encouraged to use the shopping cart feature in SIS to make the enrollment process faster for them.

Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence (SARV) Prevention
Each undergraduate student at MSU is responsible for completing a training on the prevention of Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct (RVSM). For first-year and transfer students, an in-person workshop called Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence (SARV) Prevention is offered. For second-year students, an in-person workshop called Bystander Network is offered. Third-year and above undergraduate students participate in an online module training each year. Students who have not completed their RVSM prevention training will have a hold placed on their student account starting Nov. 1. A hold means that the student may not be able to access some system functions such as viewing their grades or transcript.
Information regarding this mandatory training can be found here. Students can contact empower.msu.edu if they have additional questions about their specific situation. Prevention of gender-based violence continues to be a priority on MSU's campus, and we appreciate your partnership with this effort.

2024-25 On-Campus Housing Sign-Up
It’s time to start preparing for 2024-25 housing sign-up! We’ve outlined helpful information below. Please contact the Housing Assignments Office with questions.
Current First-Year Students
We are pleased to be your students’ on-campus home for their first two years at Michigan State. MSU has a two-year live-on requirement for students enrolling as first-year students. Off-campus apartments often begin marketing to students and their families to sign a lease for the following year as soon as they’ve arrived on campus. It is important to note, first-year students should not be signing any off-campus leases, housing agreements or housing contracts this fall. Current first year students will select their on-campus space for 2024-25 in the spring. Learn more here.
Current Second-Year+ Students
Students who are currently in their second year+ and living on campus will have the opportunity to submit an interest form to determine who receives a 2024-25 on-campus housing selection time. The form will open mid-October. On-campus options for second year+ students include 1855 Place, University Village, Owen Hall, and residence hall apartments.
Students who currently live in 1855 Place or University Village will have the opportunity to retain their current space in late October. Students living in a residence hall or residence hall apartment cannot retain their current space. Learn more here.
Current Off-Campus Students
At this time, students who are currently living off campus and wish to live on campus will be able to sign-up for an on-campus housing waitlist in January 2024. We will share more information at a later date! You also can review off-campus housing resources here.

FAFSA Changes
The FAFSA Simplification Act, passed by Congress in 2021, makes significant changes to the process of applying for federal financial aid. As a result, the 2024-25 FAFSA application will not be made available by the U.S. Department of Education until late December, instead of the Oct. 1 date you may be used to. An exact date for availability of the 2024-25 FAFSA has not yet been announced. The 2023-24 FAFSA application will remain available until the 2024-25 application is posted in December. If you have already completed the 2023-24 application, you should not resubmit.
More news about changes to the FAFSA will be posted on the Office of Financial Aid website as it is made available to us.
