Victor Picou, PSA Member since 2004
President 2013-2021

Since 2004, I have seen these high levels of growth in PSA:  a wider spectrum of artistic expression, more cultural diversity of members, and more community awareness and interactions. The pandemic has challenged us all in ways we had neither imagined nor desired. I have been painting and drawing more than ever, as “safer at home” commanded that I take advantage of my home studio. Keeping in touch with, listening to, and learning from other artists, some of whom I’ve known for 30-40 years, is vital to my life. At 75.5 years of age, I understand what I do best and what is not important in life. Having been raised in the country, I have always been mindful of my environment, but now I look deeper at color and forms around me. I enjoy exchanging images and videos of leaves, trees, the birds and the bees, and always, the flowers. Being with others and people watching is such joy. I love aloneness too, as that’s when I hear the universe hum.

Coordinating our PSA Salons is a big plus for me. Generating social gatherings along with our art is vital to the success of PSA and to individual artists. This is where we share our hearts and art.

I am honored to be exhibiting with over 100 other artists at the Brody Botanical Center of The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, March 26-27th, 2022, in a juried exhibit/sale called "Spring into Art." Visit www.sanmarinoleague.org/Events for more information.( Weekend reservation is still required at The Huntington) Several other PSA Members are also exhibiting (Sandy Fisher, Claire Menegetti, Serena Refoua, and David Sikes). I will exhibit six stone sculptures in the show. I will be there all weekend, and look forward to seeing you.

Hello, Fellow Artists!

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
                                                     - Picasso

Here we are in April already, can you believe it? I can’t … the year is definitely rolling on. I want to say thank you to those who reached out to me after last month’s newsletter. Your support was and is greatly appreciated.

Additionally, we had our first in-person member meeting and it was delightful! There is, to me, almost nothing better than getting together with a group of artists to talk about process, work, inspiration, and ideas. It certainly cleansed my soul and I hope all who joined in felt the same. A big "thank you" to Kathleen Swaydan for hosting and agreeing to host again this month. We will be doing more of the same the second Saturday of April. Please bring some work you would like to discuss, receive feedback on, or even just to share your excitement about. I will be thrilled with another lively and deep conversation. We were able to talk about a lot, but if anyone didn’t get their chance to share then we will start with those pieces and move onto new work after.

I am also looking forward to our 97th Annual show and hope that everyone took the time to apply. The space is grand and makes for a beautiful display! Thank you very much to Larry and the exhibitions committee for always making our work shine.

Warmly,
Shaney

APRIL MEMBER MEETING and
Art Critique!
We started a new program at the March meeting of sharing our art and getting feedback from our member friends.

Are you stuck? Do you want friendly feedback about your work? Do you want to see work that other members are creating?  Do you want to connect with friends and make new ones? Do you want to talk about art? Then come to our April Meeting and Art Critique.

Don’t be alarmed by the word "critique." It does not mean critical, and we have one rule:
Comments must be articulate, kind and specific. Just saying “I like it” or “I don’t like it” isn’t allowed. What do you like? Is there a specific suggestion that would help the piece be stronger? What was your first impression of the work?
Here’s how it works:
•  Bring one artwork. It could be a work in progress, "almost" finished, or fully finished.

•  Participants will have five minutes to discuss their work:  their inspiration, their process, and any challenges they had/have with the piece.

•  The audience will have five minutes to respond with what they see, make suggestions, or offer comments.

•
Participants will be chosen at random – names drawn out of a basket.

•  The number of participants will be determined by how many show up and how much time we have. Those who are not able to present this month will get “first dibs” for next month’s drawing.
Off the Wall
Here’s the latest from the Exhibition Committee:
By the time you read this, the 97th Annual Juried Exhibition artwork take-in will be completed. The juror, Ken Ronney, will have completed his responsibilities selecting the artworks and selecting the awards. The creation of the print catalog and the online version of the exhibition will be well underway. The Exhibition Committee wants to thank all of the PSA members who submitted entries and congratulate those who were selected for the exhibition.

Information about artwork drop-off, installation, and availability of print bins will be arriving very soon in your email box, so look out for it. Also during April there will be announcements about future exhibitions, both near-term and later in 2022 and 2023.

The 97th Annual Juried Exhibition opens Monday, May 2 and closes Friday, May 27. The opening reception will be the first weekend in May.  The actual date will be determined soon.

Here’s a question for everyone.  Should PSA have a closing reception on Friday night, May 27?  Please send your thoughts to:  Exhibitions@PasadenaSocietyofArtists.org

Volunteers will be needed for the installation of artwork at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center Gallery Monday, May 2. As a volunteer you will help to place the art around the gallery and then install it as well. No need to bring your hammer. The gallery is using a new system of installing the art that does away with the traditional picture hook. Just bring your measuring tape, a pencil and calculator. This installation may take a little longer than previous installations.

Volunteers will also be needed for the reception(s) to assist Pat Lee with hospitality. More info about hospitality needs will be coming out soon in an email notice sent to all participating artists.

See you at the April general meeting.
