Dear Roos,
We are looking forward to starting in-person classes on Monday, Feb. 1. As more of us have been returning to campus, we feel encouraged by everyone’s continued vigilance on mask wearing, social distancing and hand washing. This is reflected in our low COVID-19 rate, which we share in daily notifications at umkc.edu/coronavirus.
As a further step in keeping us safe, we are offering free COVID testing to all students, faculty and staff, also starting Monday, Feb. 1. Our Student Health and Wellness director Obie Austin is leading this clinic, and we are grateful to him and the UMKC employees and students who are making this possible.
- Testing is available at our convenient drive-up clinic at our 4825 Troost Ave. building. Appointments are required through go.umkc.edu/covidtesting.
- The rapid antigen tests provide results in about 15 minutes.
- For those without vehicle transportation, limited testing will still be available by appointment at the Student Health and Wellness Center, 5110 Oak St., Brookside 51 Building, Suite 237.
Also, many of you have asked us about the coronavirus vaccine — it is top of mind for most of us. While we do have the people, processes and equipment in place, our university does not currently have a supply of vaccine, a challenge nationwide. Since the goal is to get our community vaccinated as quickly as possible, we ask that you register for the vaccine wherever it may be first available whether that is the health department in your county of residence, local hospitals or primary-care physician.
To learn more about the vaccine, please read this Q & A with our Health Sciences Campus deans. Mary Anne Jackson, dean of the School of Medicine; Russ Melchert, dean of the School of Pharmacy and interim dean of the School of Dentistry; and Joy Roberts, interim dean of the School of Nursing and Health Studies, are involved in leading vaccination efforts for our campus and Kansas City area communities.
Our medical, nursing, pharmacy and dental faculty and students have been on the front lines since the beginning to fight this pandemic, and many are in the process of being vaccinated as healthcare providers. We thank them for their ongoing care of our community during this difficult time, and we appreciate your efforts in keeping all of us safe.
In this together,
C. Mauli Agrawal, Ph.D. Chancellor
Jenny Lundgren, Ph.D. Provost
