REMEMBERING SARAH

The Healing Power of Nature

When I was a kid, there were many hiding places I would retreat to when I was sad, angry, upset, or dealing with my own teenage angst. None of the places were inside my house. There was an old oak tree turned tree fort perfect for sitting and sulking. There was a large rock we called “Vader Rock” that was just the spot for being mad at my parents, and there was a small ditch near the railroad tracks where any kid with big feelings could sit and throw dirt clods until those feelings subsided. Each of these spots were important to both my physical and mental well-being.

Summer 2023

Hello everyone, Summer is upon us after a wet, cool Winter and Spring. All the rain we received made for a great wildflower display across the Nature Reserve. I hope you got to see it through one of our many community programs. An adequate amount of rain is vitally important to the health of the Nature Reserve and the species that live in it.

The San Diego and Riverside Fairy Shrimp are two endangered species protected on The Nature Reserve.

San Diego and Riverside Fairy Shrimp

Fairy shrimp are one of the seven endangered species protected on The Nature Reserve. These freshwater crustaceans occur in vernal pools. Vernal pools are seasonal wetlands that form in depressions of gently sloping grasslands where the ground beneath is composed of hard clay or bedrock. They collect water during the winter through spring, typically drying up by summer and remaining dry through fall.

The Buzz in the Garden

Bees aren’t the only thing buzzing this summer. Residents at Casa de Amma are buzzing about the garden programs provided by The Nature Reserve in partnership with Goin’ Native Therapeutic Gardens (GNTG). Since early 2022, this community partnership has provided nature-based lessons in the outdoor garden at Casa de Amma, a unique apartment community located in the heart of San Juan Capistrano. Casa de Amma nurtures the abilities and independence of adults with special needs with a focus on three main support areas — Living, Learning and Belonging.
