| Member Feedback Needed on Prior Authorization | |
TMA seeks information from physician members regarding experiences obtaining prior authorizations for patients. Feedback is also requested from practices regarding the services and drugs for which physicians receive approval 90 percent or more of the time. In 2020, TMA spearheaded the Prior Authorization Workgroup which has held monthly discussions between physicians, medical practice executives and insurance plans with the purpose of working toward solutions to improve the PA process.
Please find a summary of the group’s progress, and consider quickly complete TMA's Prior Authorization Experience Form. Member participation and input is valued and appreciated.
TMA would also like to learn how practices submit prior authorization requests for procedures, services and drugs along with statistics on approval rates. Learn more about how to provide this data here.

| TMA Updated Law Guide Topics | |
- Covid Liability Protection
In August 2020, the General Assembly passed the "Tennessee Covid-19 Recovery Act” which extends emergency liability protections. Any future Covid-related lawsuit must plead specific facts, which reasonably concludes "that the alleged loss, damage, injury, or death was caused by the defendant's willful, malicious, or criminal act or omission, or performed for personal financial gain.” TMA’s Law Guide topic, Covid Liability Protection, explains the law in detail.
- Updated Abortion Law Guide Topic
On June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the longstanding Roe v. Wade decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. This action immediately returned the ability to fully regulate abortion to the individual states. This decision has caused confusion in Tennessee regarding which abortion laws are in effect and when. Our Law Guide topic, Abortion, answers those questions and has recently been updated. We encourage members to carefully review this topic so they fully understand what is legal in Tennessee. Additionally, an FAQ document is being created to address specific questions we receive from members. It will be released ahead of the abortion “trigger” law that is scheduled to go into effect in mid-August. TMA’s legal department is available to answer any questions you may have regarding this topic. Please email legal@tnmed.org with specific questions.
