February Happenings
Here's what we're up to this month.
  • Volunteer CelebrationPlease join us in recognizing our 2015 Tutors of the Year (Carole Springer and Pat L'Herrou) on Saturday, February 13 at 2:30pm in the African American Heritage Center Auditorum. Writer and educational consultant Anita Royston will read from her anthology, Our Black Mothers: Brave, Bold and Beautiful. Reception to follow the reading and awards.

Friends, family, and students all welcome to attend this event.

     RSVPs appreciated, but not required.

  • Mother Language Day: We are once again partnering with Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA) and WriterHouse to recognize International Mother Language Day, Sunday, February 21, 2016, 5:30-7:30pm at CitySpace, 100 5th street NE. This annual event, established by the United Nations in 2000, honors linguistic diversity and multilingualism. We'll celebrate by hosting a reading of admired poems from around the world.

To that end, we are seeking 15-20 readers to participate in the event. Readers will read one short poem in their native language (or a language they admire, other than English) by an admired poet. Poems should be under a page in length.

If you’re interested, please complete this form by February 12, 2016. The partnering organizations will review submissions in order to ensure a diversity of languages are represented at the event. We will contact readers to let them know if they've been selected. This event is free and open to the public.

  • Spring Tutor Trainings:  We have experienced incredible demand for tutors and so are adding another training to our spring schedule. If you or someone you know wants to become a tutor, please sign up for our March 12 or April 2 tutor training by calling 434-977-3838 or emailing Amie

For more information about any of these events, email Amie.
