Teacher Professional Development
This summer, the PEER Program collaborated with Education Service Centers and the K12 Summer Institute to provide three remote professional development opportunities. Thirty-two teachers from across Texas participated in synchronous (real-time) Zoom sessions to receive training in the content and implementation of the One Health curriculum while interacting with presenters and other teachers in attendance. Teachers then had the opportunity to explore a module on their own before returning to share feedback and gain insight from fellow educators. The workshops and curriculum were well received as evidenced by the following teacher feedback: “The workshop has given me plenty of supplemental aids for this upcoming school year especially for my distance-based students.” and “Awesome workshop! Thank you for the modules, it will definitely help me with the distance learning!” Each teacher earned 6 CPE credits for their participation.
In addition to providing teachers with resources to enhance remote STEM education, teachers provided the PEER Program with excellent suggestions for editing our curriculum to optimize student engagement and learning outcomes. Upcoming One Health curriculum features, based on teacher feedback, include fill-in-the-blank notes, audio recordings of reading material, and video viewing guides.
You still have an opportunity to take part in Middle School Science & One Health Curriculum professional development through our asynchronous workshops! As part of this self-paced professional development, teachers will have access to instructional videos as well as Moodle accounts to explore the One Health curriculum and enroll their classes. Teachers who view the videos and complete the homework associated with reviewing a lesson module can receive 4 CPE credits. Micro-credential sessions provide an additional avenue for teachers to learn about the One Health curriculum and gain CPEs. Teachers choose from a variety of short one health-related activities to complete based on interests and time. A digital CPE certificate is awarded upon completion of either the asynchronous workshop or micro-credential activity.
