It's UBC Giving Day a full 24 hours to support causes that will shape a better world. UBC Botanical Garden provides hands-on experience with plants, and is a great way to connect people to nature and its many benefits. We're committed to increasing access for low-income community members. Donate to the Botanical Garden Community Outreach Fund on Giving Day to support activities like Biodiversity Days and the Family Nature Walk.

Held every spring, Biodiversity Days is a month-long celebration of the UN International Day of Biological Diversity (May 22). The Family Nature Walk (May 18 & 19, 2024) is a weekend adventure designed for children and their families to spend quality time outdoors while discovering secret gardens and educational stations. Equipped with Kids Nature Kits, children explore the wonders of science and nature by learning about the ecosystems and species in our region.

By supporting the Botanical Garden Community Outreach Fund, you will help UBC Botanical Garden provide a unique opportunity for children facing financial challenges to enjoy a positive adventure in nature on the May long weekend.

Experience Greenheart Treewalk

With April's arrival the Greenheart TreeWalk has opened for the season!

Since launching in 2008, adventurous visitors to the Garden have navigated the walkways and tree platforms. Suspended high above the forest floor, the walk reaches nearly twenty metres above the forest floor. The walkway will give you a bird’s eye view of the Garden's coastal temperate rainforest. If you're looking for a great family adventure the Garden & TreeWalk are a fantastic way to create cherished memories. Join us in embracing the great outdoors and let the adventure begin!

Prunus ‘Ichiyo’

2024 will go down as an exceptional year for ornamental cherries, but one of the least predictable for timing. For example, the flowering schedule outlined in the handbook Ornamental Cherries in Vancouver, published in 2014 after several years of careful phenological observations, has been mostly turned on its head. Early cherries, like Prunus ‘Accolade’, are still blooming now (in the first week of April), when they typically flower in late February or March. This is a cherry that announces itself with confidence. Its delicate branching and wide spreading crown add considerably to its charm, but people are primarily attracted to the pizzazz of its semi-double, unapologetically bright pink flowers. ‘Accolade’ is a “modern” (i.e., 20th century) cross between the spring cherry, Prunus itosakura, and another Japanese species, Prunus sargentii, which is known in Japan as O-yama-zakura (big mountain cherry—for its large stature). Biodiversity Days are back!

Our fourth annual Biodiversity Days is back with a month-long event in May, honouring the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22). This event has a series of engagement opportunities that aim to celebrate and raise awareness of the fragile species, genes and ecosystems that sustain our communities. In 2024, the theme is “Be Part of the Plan”, where everyone has a role to play to advance The Biodiversity Plan.
