Whether it’s in the Amazon rainforest or the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, through RARE, Radford University undergraduate researchers connect with nature, learn from local communities, conduct personally designed projects and contribute to scientific knowledge.
Both research opportunities allow Radford students to feel a deep appreciation for the land and communities where they are studying and witness the connections of ecosystems and cultures through immersive fieldwork.
The RARE program will host RARE Fest on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, 1 Partnership Circle, Abingdon, Virginia. This event will feature an introduction to the RARE program, a video about the different aspects of the curriculum and posters, tables and presentations about the research conducted during the expeditions.

Spring and Summer Class Registration |
|
|
The Radford University Office of the Registrar will open registration for 2024 spring and summer courses on Monday, Oct. 30, at 7 a.m. for all undergraduate and graduate students.
Registration start times for undergraduate students have been assigned according to classification and can be accessed on the Registration page on the website.
|
| |
|
Students with approved registration overloads will be permitted to begin registering for more than 18 hours on Monday, Nov. 13. The following information can help faculty and staff as we work with students to register for classes
|
|
|
- Spring and summer class schedules
The 2024 spring and summer class schedules are now published and accessible online. Room assignments, if already made, are subject to change.
- Registration PINs
Registration PINs have been assigned to all degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled this term. Graduate students do not need PINs to register. Please note that you must select a 2024 spring or summer term to view your advisees’ PINs.
PINs can be accessed in any one of three ways:
1) Via the Advisee Listing found in the Self-Service Banner (PINs will be listed under
Registration Notices on the top right side of the Student Profile);
2) From academic departments’ administrative assistants or from the Highlander
Success Center; or
3) By contacting the registrar’s office at 540-831-5271.
- Undergraduate and graduate catalogs
Undergraduate and graduate catalogs can be found on the website. Those who need to confirm a student’s catalog year can access it in their Degree Works degree audit or by contacting the registrar’s office. The Degree Works degree audit can be found in OneCampus by searching “Degree Audit” and selecting the “Degree Audit Responsive Dashboard” tile.
- Course overrides
Only department chairs and school directors in individual departments and schools have the authority to override a prerequisite requirement, a course capacity limit or a time conflict with another course. That override is given electronically through the student information system. Once an override has been placed on a student’s record, the student must register for the course online in the same way that the student would register for any other course.
- Additional information and training
In addition to accessing advisee listings in the Self-Service Banner, faculty and staff can access student schedules, unofficial transcripts, transfer credit information, student holds and more by clicking on the Banner SSB Student Menu.

Facilities Maintenance Request Form |
|
|
A new service tool for faculty, staff and students on the main Radford University campus is now available to help create and track general maintenance work orders.
The facilities maintenance request form is available to all Radford University faculty, staff and students. We encourage using the form for general, non-emergency corrective issues. Facilities Management staff still welcome calls at 540-831-7800 during regular hours and urge that you contact Radford University Police for all after-hours service emergencies.
In 2022, Facilities Management managed over 11,000 work orders, including 3,200 phone calls, 5,100 emails, 1,700 in-person requests and 1,100 fix-it forms. This new tool improves communication and allows for adding notification emails, tracking, notes and comments. You can see in real time the status of your request and the completion date.
A tutorial on using the form and managing requests will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 9 a.m. during the Staff Senate Zoom meeting.
For more information about this new resource, contact Facilities Management at facilities@radford.edu.

Other Ways to Advertise on Campus |
|
|
To get the word out about an event on campus, there are ways to advertise beyond email and social media.
Mass communications:
|
|
|
-
RUInvolved will cross-post to the university calendar and the RUMobile app. It has the added benefit of allowing you to capture attendance and send a post-event survey.
-
Flyers can also help spread the word. Drop off 11 copies of flyers (no larger than 8.5” x 11”) at the front desk at “The Bonnie” Hurlburt Student Center on the main campus or one copy at the Radford University Carilion (RUC) Student Affairs office in Roanoke. The staff will hang them on the designated public posting boards. All other posting areas are under the purview of the dean or department head where the board is located. Empty sign holders are not posting areas.
- Banners on the Heth Hall bridge on main campus can be printed on campus, and the space can be reserved through the university scheduling office. Facilities staff will hang and remove banners.
-
Outdoor chalking is permitted in Radford, but please review the full policy for compliance and to avoid a cleaning fee.
-
Ads in The Tartan or spots on Radio Free Radford can also help. Learn more at https://www.rutartan.com/wordpress/advertising/
|
|
|
-
Tables on “The Bonnie” Hurlburt Student Center Plaza can be secured through the university scheduling office. Keep your eyes up and invite folks to come over to the table.
- Hand out invitations or informational material in public areas on campus. Residence halls are not considered public areas. Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, where RUC is located in Roanoke, is not a public area.
- Wear an “Ask Me” T-shirt or button advertising your event.
- Ask students if they’d like to announce their events at the end of class if you are teaching a course.
- Collaborate with other groups to help bring in their interests and members.
