Friends,
As I've spent much of the last two weeks flitting from event to event honoring—and no doubt being astonished by—the work of students and colleagues, the final stanza of my favorite poem, Li-Young Lee's "From Blossoms," has echoed:
|
There are days we live
as if death were nowhere
in the background; from joy
to joy to joy, from wing to wing,
from blossom to blossom to
impossible blossom, to sweet impossible blossom.
|
It's May, and on a college campus, that's a season charged with feeling—the stress of finals, sure, but also that sweet feeling of relief just after. May offers us the promise of summer, the jubilant soundtrack of "Pomp and Circumstance," but also the corollary sadness that the people we've spent four years growing to love, who have shaped us in turn, now move on to new locations, new pastures, new lives. It's joy, of course, that we get to send them with blessing.
In these last few weeks, I've made every effort to "live as if death were nowhere in the background," celebrating from joy to joy to joy as my students and colleagues wow me with their commitments—to one another, to this wonderful institution, to their communities and the common good they seek to serve.
Read on to feel similarly inspired. Seniors, thank you for all you've given us; stay in touch! Continuing students, make us proud this summer as you pursue all manner of good things. And to each of you, I'll sign off like we used to do in yearbooks this time of year: HAGS! We'll see you soon!
Cheers,
|
