Haiti Week at Vanderbilt 
Join the Vanderbilt Center for Latin American Studies and the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health for the first-ever Haiti Week, Feburary 2-10. Highlights of this week include three guest physicians from Haiti, a Kreyol lesson, and a Haiti cooking class. A special lecture on "Popularizing Hydroponics as Climate Change Adaptation in the Caribbean" will be co-sponsored by the Vanderbilt EOS Environment Project and the Department of Anthropology.

Drs. Telemaque and Pierre, Haitian physicians
Addressing the Surgical Burden of Disease in Haiti

Dr. Telemaque has been instrumental in training most of the general surgeons practicing in Haiti and knows the health system and its challenges intimately. He serves as the Coordinator for the Haitian Review of Surgery and Anesthesia, the Haitian SAGES curriculum for resident education, and the Hernia Repair for the Underserved program. He is a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and is a Member of both the Haitian Association of Surgery and the Haitian Medical Association. Dr. Telemaque holds a Master of Science in Health Services Management and trained clinically as a surgeon in Haiti, Belgium, France, and the United States. He has spoken at a variety of international venues including the Boston launch of the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. Dr. Pierre is a graduate of the Haitian State University, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, where he became certified to practice medicine. He worked at Saint Antoine Hospital in Jeremie, Haiti before becoming a physician for five health centers of the Health Department in Grand’Anse. From 1999 to 2003, he served as project manager of a health program on HIV/AIDS, financed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and CARE-Haiti. Following the earthquake in 2010, Dr. Pierre founded the Community Mission for Hope, Inc., a non-profit organization that aims to helping Haiti with education, health care and economic opportunity.

Frist Global Health Leaders Program is funded by Hope Through Healing Hands, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, and provides students, residents, and fellows in health professions with the opportunity to serve and train in underserved communities around the world. (link)

Overall Family Fellowship for International Research is sponsored by Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics. It provides support for Vanderbilt medical and nursing students to gain experience and training in a global health setting. (link)

Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) Summer Awards Programs are available to Vanderbilt students pursuing research projects in Latin America. (link)
