Dear Friends,
This summer, my family and I were citizen scientist crew members of 5 Gyres' 18th expedition to study marine plastic pollution and explore solutions to this expanding international problem. 5 Gyres, co-founded by WINGS WorldQuest Fellow Anna Cummins and her husband Marcus Erikson, has been at the forefront of marine plastic research, education, and activism for the past 10 years.
We spent 9 days sailing along the Indonesian archipelago in the Coral Triangle. We trawled for microplastics in coastal waters, cleaned up 8,738 pieces of plastic debris weighing a total of 500 pounds from 5 beaches, and recorded brands and types of debris to contribute to the BAN (Better Alternatives Now) List 3.0.
5 Gyres’ small and powerful team practices "science to solutions" methodology - collecting and compiling data, training and empowering citizen scientists to participation and action, publishing results, and contributing to positive public practices and policy. This vision and application of education, citizen science, and community involvement embodies what WINGS Fellows represent. They practice their scientific passions and explore to contribute to world knowledge, inspire others to action, advance scientific inquiry, and promote environmental conservation.
The action items I promise to take:
  • Carry my water bottle with me and stop buying plastic water bottles on the go.
  • Carry a bamboo utensil pouch with me and keep one in my desk.
  • Talk to my workplace about replacing plastic water cups with reusable.
  • Stop using plastic baggies. Use washable containers instead.
  • Remember to say “no straw” whenever I order a cold drink.

Please read on to see other inspiration from the WINGS international community of explorers and scientists.

What WINGS' Women of Discovery Are Up To

  • Flag Carrier Gaelin Rosenwaks will be the expedition biologist and photographer on an expedition to the Blue Hole of Belize, a giant marine sinkhole. The expedition will be led by Fabien Cousteau and Richard Branson.

  • Flag Carrier Susan R. Eaton will speak this week in Helsinki at Women in the Arctic, a conference focused on "bridging policy, research and lived experience" as part of UArctic Congress 2018. Eaton recently led the Sedna Epic Team on a dive and snorkel expedition to Nunavut and Greenland.

  • Stephanie Dolrenry, the Director of Science at Lion Guardians, an organization founded by WINGS Fellow Leela Hazzah, has been chosen to be part of the next cohort of Homeward Bound. Homeward Bound is a leadership development initiative that aims to uplift the voices of women in the STEM fields. One thousand women will participate in the program over the course of 10 years. Flag Carrier Joanna Young carried the WINGS flag on the inaugural Homeward Bound expedition in 2016.

  • In 2013, Flag Carrier Becca Peixotto was among a team of scientists who squeezed and crawled their way through an ancient cave in South Africa to retrieve fossils from an extinct species that was an ancestor to humans, Homo naledi. Now you can see the cave, too – without having to experience claustrophobia – via the Dinaledi Chamber VR experience app.

  • Conservation Through Public Health, founded by WINGS Fellow Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, will expand its model of recruiting village conservation teams to the Budongo Forest.

Meg Lowman
Becca Peixotto

WINGS is co-hosting its second webinar with the New York Academy of Sciences on September 8. WINGS Fellow and Flag Carrier Meg Lowman and Flag Carrier Becca Peixotto will share their ideas about science communications with participants of 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures, NYAS's virtual mentoring and skills development program for high school girls from around the world who are interested in STEM careers. The live webinar will not be accessible to the public, but a recording will be available afterward.
