Alumni Association Chapter News
A trifecta of great food, live music, and vibrant conversation set the scene at the Law School Alumni Association Alumni of Color Chapter Summer Soiree. Special thanks to Alfred C. (Fred) Cerullo, III '86 and the Grand Central Partnership for hosting at Midtown Manhattan's Pershing Square.
In the Spotlight Fred Cerullo '86 and his work in the real estate industry are in the Mattone Institute's latest Real Estate Alumni Spotlight.
"Law is how people do and act correctly. It also provides a remedy when some people do not act ethically. As an administrative law judge, I wanted to always do the right thing—not pay attention to people who have a special interest in the case. If something was not in evidence, don't think about it. That was my mantra." -- Maria Vittoria (Garretto) Todaro '52. Todaro just turned 101. You can read more about her and her life in the law via our LinkedIn post.
Media Mention Renee Wilm '99, long-time Baker Botts corporate partner, represented Liberty Media as an M & A attorney for years. Now, she's taken a highly visible role with Liberty as CEO of the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix. In a recent story for the Nevada Independent about her new leadership role, Wilm shares: "Early in my career as a corporate lawyer, I was often the only woman in the room. I could not be happier to see women breaking barriers across industries. Sports have been uniquely male-denominated for many years, but experiencing the sea change occurring in sports is all the more exciting."

Professor Elaine Chiu has been busy in the field sharing her expert insights on law enforcement's role in addressing anti-Asian hate crimes in New York City. SILive.com wrote about a presentation she gave recently to mark Immigrant Heritage Month. Professor Chiu is a member of the Asian American Bar Association of New York's Anti-Asian Violence Task Force and the New York State Bar Association Task Force Against Anti-Asian and Anti-Semitic Hate.
At the Association of Legal Writing Directors biennial conference, Vice Dean and Professor Rachel Smith presented on a panel titled Find Your Red Threads: Rethinking Faculty Engagement to Combat Burnout and Rediscover Your Joy and Meaning in Your Words.
Opinions "The resulting ruling, however, is not just a muddled set of instructions for communication between government and tech platforms (an urgent issue for those concerned with misinformation as we approach the 2024 presidential election). It is also a bellwether of a disconcerting new political tactic: using state and local authorities, along with federal forum- and judge-shopping, to make national internet policy," writes Professor Kate Klonick in a guest essay for the New York Times. Read the full essay (subscription wall), titled "The Future of Online Speech Shouldn't Belong to One Trump-Appointed Judge in Louisiana."
In the latest episode of the Legal Spirits podcast, Professors Mark Movsesian and Marc DeGirolami discuss the U.S. Supreme Court's decisions in Groff v. DeJoy, the Title VII religious accommodations case, and 303 Creative v. Elenis, the website designer case. Were these simple cases masquerading as complicated ones? Do they suggest the Court is rethinking its views on free speech, religious freedom, and anti-discrimination law? Listen in to find out.
