Greetings! We have enjoyed seeing so many of you on campus for tours, shadow days, testing, and parent visits. I’d like to share a glimpse of campus life through our Hockaday Highlights and share a few important reminders.
On Monday, January 27, Hockaday hosted the National Coalition of Girls School Educating Girls Symposium, Leading Schools, Leading Girls: Preparing for the Future specifically geared to educators of girls. It was an inspiring day and a great reminder that we have a unique opportunity in all-girls schools to prepare our girls to lead lives of purpose and impact. We gleaned valuable information that our faculty and staff will utilize in the classrooms and in supporting our community.
If you were walking through our halls right now, you would find our first graders practicing their lines and dances to produce “Temples and Tombs” while our Prekindergarten students prepare songs for their upcoming singing Val-o-grams. Our Middle School students are congratulating their peers’ successes as our fifth grade Spelling Bee winner will go on to compete in the Dallas County Private School Round, and the eighth grade Geography Bee winner is set to take the national exam. In the Fine Arts Center, the sound of drills and power tools being used by our technical theater students is heard in chorus with the singing, dancing, and music of rehearsals for our upcoming Upper School musical, Crazy For You. Our athletes of all ages are looking forward to an upcoming community Spirit Night on Friday!
It was a great weekend for the Middle School and Upper School Robotics Teams. After competing among 600 teams, three Middle School Hockaday Future Lego League teams will advance to the North Texas Regional Championship! Competing against former world finalists, the Upper School Robotics Team placed first in the First Tech Challenge competition.
Meanwhile, all of our girls can be found learning more about their friends and the Chinese culture. Last Saturday, the Boarding department hosted a special 2020 Chinese New Year Celebration with Lunar New Year gifts, a traditional Lion Dance and a Chinese Rap performance. A special assembly devoted to Chinese culture took place in the Lower School and involved girls from the Lower, Middle and Upper School divisions. The girls in the AP Chinese class designed the invitation cards, the Chinese II students rehearsed and performed the lion dance, the Middle School girls performed a dance, and a few other musicians and artists contributed their talents. Parent volunteers were instrumental in bringing it all together for a wonderful community celebration.
A quick reminder, as you know, the application deadline was Monday, January 27. Feel free to log into the parent portal below to track your application progress and review your checklist. Thank you for giving our Admission team time to process the many things that are coming into our office this week. Admission personnel will contact families the week of February 3 regarding any required items missing from your daughter’s application. While we are reviewing application submissions during this time, there is no need to contact us.
Please be assured that receipt of all materials associated with your daughter’s application will be reflected in the checklist and we will contact you if we need anything to complete her application.
All my best,
Maryanna Phipps
Director of Admission and Enrollment Management
