Exciting project alert. Linda Cotton teamed up with faculty from Nursing and SMHS to produce a video-based simulation of a primary care encounter with a patient who identifies as transgender or gender diverse. This learning experience will provide students from the Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, and Medicine programs with practice providing affirming care to transgender or gender diverse patients and addressing their unique needs.
Learners proceed through a patient visit choosing options of what to say or ask. With each question or statement a video of the standardized patient's reaction plays in response to the choice. Learners are given immediate feedback with a rationale about why their choice was affirming or non-affirming.
The research team will evaluate the impact of this approach on students’ knowledge, confidence and beliefs, and assess their perceptions of the video-based simulation approach. Study results will inform the development of comprehensive training to improve primary care providers' affirming care competence, with the ultimate aim of addressing health disparities experienced by transgender or gender diverse people.
The faculty team includes Rhonda Schwindt (Principal Investigator) and Co-Investigators, Laurie Posey, Amy Caggiula, Howard Straker, Cameron Hogg, Christine Pintz, and Quiping (Pearl) Zhou. This project was funded by the GW Cross-Disciplinary Research Fund.
