Center Court - The Newsletter of the Orange County Clerk of Courts

October 2019

Join Us for Operation Green Light
I'm pleased to announce my office will participate in Operation Green Light this week, October 14-18. Orange County customers with outstanding traffic tickets and criminal fines will have an opportunity to pay overdue court obligations while saving the 25 percent collections surcharge.
Customers may be eligible for a payment plan and have their suspended driver licenses reinstated if all requirements are met. While the collections fees are being waived, a down payment is required for a payment plan and reinstatement fees are applicable.
This initiative aims to help thousands of people in Orange County with overdue traffic tickets or criminal fines whose driver licenses have been suspended. No appointment or registration necessary. Just visit our Traffic Division in Suite 410 of the Orange County Courthouse this week (October 14-18) during the extended hours listed on myorangeclerk.com

Clerks Against Domestic Violence Workshop
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, a topic that I care deeply about. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence in their lifetime.

In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, my office will host a “Clerks Against Domestic Violence” workshop in partnership with Commissioner Tony Ortiz on Tuesday, October 29th from 6:30 p.m - 8:30 p.m at the Engelwood Neighborhood Center. We have additionally partnered with the Mental Health Association of Central Florida, the Orlando Police Department, Harbor House of Central Florida, and more to bring awareness and valuable information to Orange County residents.

The event will cover topics on how to file a restraining order, a Reflections of Trauma presentation by the Mental Health Association, as well as a self-defense class by the Orlando Police Department. The event is free and open to the public. I hope you will join us to learn more! Click the button below to register.

Employee Spotlight: Trudie
You may have seen my staff's friendly faces at the front counters, spoken with helpful individuals on the phone, visited our website, or perhaps attended court and witnessed our trial clerks in action. But do you know what employees at the Clerk's Office really do each day?
We put together a video series to provide a behind-the-scenes look at what it's like to work at the Clerk's Office through my staff's eyes. Each month, I will highlight one employee spotlight video. This month, a deputy clerk named Trudie shares her story about working in the Call Center.
Legal Matters Child Support and Family Law Forum Drew a Crowd in Bithlo
On Thursday, September 26th, my office hosted a free Legal Matters Forum: “Child Support and Family Law.”
This is one of our key events for our Access to Justice initiative, with the purpose of educating the public on legal topics and increasing the accessibility of our office. My staff and I are grateful to the Bithlo community, park staff and insightful speakers including our very own Family Division Operational Assistant Manager Christina Evans, Department of Revenue's David Gillen and Cheri Wright, and Judge Diana Tennis.
Some of the topics highlighted included an explanation of the duties of the Clerk's Office, how the Clerk’s Office can assist you, and expanding on the services provided by the Self Help Center.
During the Legal Matter Forum, we also heard great tips from the bench from Judge Diana Tennis on the Do’s and Don’ts in court. We had an engaged crowd and we are proud to continue serving our community.
I would also like to acknowledge our Clerks CARE Ambassadors Christian Santos, Kim Ramos, Liza Garcia, Elsa Ramirez and Lorri Thomas for their assistance. Thank you to all that attended. We had a fantastic turnout and are thrilled for our future upcoming events.
Instructional Video of the Month: Driver's License Clearance
The "Connect with the Clerk" video series was developed to educate and improve the customer experience. The series helps answer frequently asked questions with short, informative videos and provides step by step instructions for Clerk of Courts topics in English and Spanish. Each month, we will highlight one of these videos. As a complement to Operation Greenlight, this month's video features information about how to clear a suspended driver's license.

October Star Performer
Congratulations to Cathy Baca, our Star Performer for the month of October. Cathy is a purchasing specialist in the Financial Services division. Teammates say she is a  hardworking team player who willingly takes on additional roles and responsibilities without being asked.

"Cathy stands out because I never have to ask her if she can help out," said a colleague. "If she has a bit of time, the first thing she does is come to me and ask what she can do. She is a breath of fresh air, and she has made many suggestions for improvement to old processes."
