Oberlin to Welcome Posse Scholars from Houston
Oberlin is expanding its 17-year partnership with The Posse Foundation, a national nonprofit that teams up with selective U.S. colleges and universities to provide scholarships and leadership training for outstanding students from more than 20 cities across America. Since 2006, Oberlin has welcomed more than 170 Posse Scholars from Chicago. In fall 2025, the first Posse Scholars from Houston will begin studies alongside the 19th Chicago cohort.

Chris Jenkins Talks Conservatory Reform in New Book

Chris Jenkins, the Conservatory's associate dean for academic support and a visiting assistant professor of musicology, has played a key role in a wide range of initiatives aimed at increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion at Oberlin. In his new book, Assimilation v. Integration in Music Education: Leading Change Toward Greater Equity (Routledge Press/College Music Society), Jenkins—who has earned degrees at Harvard, New England Conservatory, and Columbia University—examines longstanding issues among U.S. conservatories and recommends strategies for addressing them.

Oberlin Football Raises $21,000 Over Three Years to Battle Pediatric Cancer
In partnership with the Go4TheGoal Foundation, Oberlin's football team continues to raise awareness and critical funds for pediatric cancer in Northeast Ohio. During the bye week in November, Yeomen student-athletes raised more than $8,100 to bring Oberlin Football's total contribution since 2021 to more than $21,000. Fundraising concluded with the traditional Lace Up for Pediatric Cancer game against Wittenberg, where Oberlin players wore yellow shoelaces in support of the fight against pediatric cancer. In the intrasquad fundraising challenge, senior Hunter Wilson '24 led his group to victory – contributing $2,230 (28%) of total funds raised.

The Fall 2023 Oberlin Alumni Magazine
The fall 2023 issue of the Oberlin Alumni Magazine is on its way to mailboxes now, with features on alums doing big things on Broadway, in the sake industry, and in the areas of public health and animal evolution. Oberlin’s newly tenured faculty also share what they’ve been learning in their research, while the cover story explores the big questions posed by the Allen Memorial Art Museum’s Northwest Ambulatory space. Plus, meet the new OAM editor, Annie Zaleski!

Artist Recital Series Plays On With Oberlin Alumni Jeremy Denk '90
Jeremy Denk '90 is touring the country with an era-spanning program featuring women composers. The playlist spans three centuries, to be exact—the 19th to the 21st, and is an exploration of women composers from the Romantic to the contemporary. Denk particularly praises the work of Phyllis Chen '99 for lifting up the intentionality of acoustics in her composition Sumitones. He returned to Finney Chapel for the Artist Recital Series on November 30. The Artist Recital Series continues with Trey McLaughlin & The Sounds of Zamar in February.

Aaliyah Bilal ’04 Named National Book Award Finalist
African American studies major Aaliyah Bilal ’04 was nominated in the fiction category for the debut short story collection Temple Folk (Simon Schuster, July 2023). Publishers Weekly describes Temple Folk as a book that “depicts African American Muslims exploring their faith and seeking liberation in the 1970s.” Bilal also appeared on NPR's All Things Considered, detailing the charcters and community represented in Temple Folk.

Alina Zhu '23 Credits Her Combined Love of Math and Music as Inspiration for a Career in Math Research
Alina Zhu '23 came to Oberlin with plans to study music composition and math. The music part was for love: She played and composed for piano. The math was more practical: It seemed like good preparation for a career in finance. But in fall 2021, she took professor Chris Marx’s Foundations of Analysis course—and it ignited her passion for math research.

Documentary by Victoria Broadus Featured at Immigration Film Festival
Visiting Assistant Professor of History Victoria Broadus spoke at the Immigration Film Festival on October 20 in Washington, D.C., about the making of her documentary Park Regent (2022), which was featured in the festival program. The documentary captures the history and long-time community of an apartment building in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of Washington D.C.
