Serving Hoosier Broadcasters Since 1998
30 September 2019
|
Good Evening,
On October 13, there will be a benefit held for Steve "Tiny" Michaels, as he recovers from surgery and has ongoing medical expenses. The benefit will be held at the Mizpah Shrine Center, 1005 Memorial Way, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Entertainment will include Mike Conley, Pat Godwin, Heywood Banks, and others. A silent auction will also be held. Friends have also created a GoFundMe.
I'm compiling a list of broadcasters who have podcasts about broadcasting. I've learned of one Hoosier broadcaster who recently started his own podcast. Ross McCampbell is the Executive Director (GM) of the WBCL Radio Network, based in Fort Wayne. The network stretches to the north into southern Michigan, to the east (Findlay; nearly to Toledo, nearly to Bellfountaine), to the south (Muncie), and to the west (nearly to Plymouth and Peru). Mr. McCampbell's podcast is 'Jocularity' – "Funny things that happened while behind the radio microphone from the DJs who were there" and it's available on several podcasting platforms. More details, here. If you have or know of a podcast that fits this description, please let me know. irw@well.com
Four Hoosier broadcasters will become members of the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Richard M. Fairbanks Hall of Fame. We'll profile two of them in today's issue, and the other two in an upcoming IRW.
Ann Craig-Cinnamon began her radio career at WIFE(AM) (1310am) and soon moved to WNAP-FM (93.1fm). There, she joined the morning show in the late 1970s, and was the first woman to have a major role in Indianapolis morning radio. In the 1980s, she became News Director for Network Indiana, the statewide news network. Other broadcasting stops in a nearly three decade broadcasting career included WZPL (99.5fm), WENS (97.1fm), WYJZ (100.9fm) and WHHH (96.3fm). In 1983, she helped put WPDS-TV (Channel 59) on the air and served as a reporter and public affairs director.
James David Longest ("David James") started his journalism career in newspapers, at the high school newspaper and in college at The University of Evansville. While in college, he worked part time for the Evansville newspapers, then became a reporter and news anchor at WGBF (1280am). In 1973, David began a four decade career in Evansville television at WFIE-TV, rising to managing editor and weekday evening anchor. Mr. James now works at Evansville's NPR affiliate WNIN-FM (88.3fm) hosting a weekly radio interview program "Two Main Street."
Let's move to the latest news...
Northeast
Federated Media's Active Rock/WBYR (98.9fm, Woodburn) names Kyle Guderian as PD, beginning Monday October 7. Mr. Guderian most recently worked for 15+ years with Emmis Communications in Chicago and St. Louis. He's also worked in Fort Wayne radio before, as PD and middays of what was then Alternative/WEJE (96.3fm, Churubusco) in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
As part of the repack, Heartland Media's FOX affiliate/WFFT-TV (Channel 55, Fort Wayne) will soon make several changes: First up, they will move from RF Channel 36 to RF Channel 20 (while 'virtually' remaining Channel 55). After that's finished, over the air viewers will have to rescan their DTV boxes. Next up, a new antenna will replace their analog antenna. The new antenna will be a bit higher on the tower, but the power will decrease. Right now, WFFT broadcasts with 1 megawatt of power at 718.5 feet, and their new antenna will be 550kW, but higher up on the tower at 787 feet. Their tower location will remain the same; alongside Hillegas Road, overlooking their TV studios on Fort Wayne's west side.
Where Are They Now? Former WBTU morning co-host AJ Maguire will debut on Tuesday in Las Vegas as morning co-host at KSNE (106.5fm) on the "AJ and Joanna Morning Show".
Northcentral
What else can we say about Jim Mackey exiting Federated Media's Country/WBYT (100.7fm, Elkhart)? Mr. Mackey joined WBYT in the fall of 2016, after working in Peoria, Illinois (APD/MD/Mornings at WFYR). He co-hosted mornings with longtime morning co-host Deb Miles, as "Mackey and Miles in the Morning."
At B100, morning co-host Deb Miles continues solo ("Miles in the Morning"), while Mr. Mackey becomes a free agent.
Erica Horvatin exits as weekend meteorologist at Weigel's ABC affiliate/WBND-LD (Channel 57, South Bend). She's now working in Albuquerque, New Mexico as the morning meteorologist for KRQE-TV (as "Erica Meyer").
Central
Cumulus' Active Rock/WNDX (93.9fm, Lawrence) welcomes Steven Lewis as PD and afternoons. Mr. Lewis will begin next Monday (October 7). Mr. Lewis last worked for iHeart in Cincinnati (Assistant Director of Custom and National Programming).
Emmis' Country/WLHK (97.1fm, Shelbyville) will debut a new morning show: Caleb and Mindy. Caleb is former KOPW (Omaha, Nebraska) PD Caleb James. Mindy is Emmis sister AC/WYXB (105.7fm, Indianapolis) broadcaster Mindy Winkler. Mr. Winkler and Ms. James once worked together in Omaha for NRG Radio.
Where Are They Now? Former WISH-TV Assistant News Director Katherine Price becomes Director of Local OTT ("Over the Top") for Scripps.
Southcentral
Update: Jimmy Foxx (James Davidson) died Sunday September 15 at age 50. Mr. Davidson) last worked at Entercom/Riverside, California at 'KFROG' (and was known on air as "Jimmy Hoppa"). Rich Anthony, Brand Manager for White River's WWWY (106.1fm, North Vernon) remembers Jimmy: "I worked with Jimmy at Y106. He did mornings, I did afternoons. I’ve never worked with a die-hard Cubs’ fan until he was hired. He was a big baseball fan but it was always first and foremost his Cubbies. He left us after a few years and went back to California. He was a good man and had a very loyal following out west. Our prayers are with his family."
