Running for NETs
There's an old saying that "90% of life is showing up." Well, no one "shows up" more for her life and NETs than physician and NET patient Elizabeth Zide.
Diagnosed in 2018, her prognosis is good. After two surgeries, 95% of her cancer has been removed. Biopsies show her cancer is slow growing, so she’ll likely enjoy a healthy life for decades to come.
An avid athlete her whole life, Zide now combines her love of physical activity with her dedication to raising money for NETRF.
"I want to raise awareness so we can get more research dollars to find better diagnostic techniques,” she said. “It’s not like other cancers, so no one type of chemotherapy works.”
She feels especially drawn to physical challenges that bring awareness to her cause.
“I’m a big proponent of living healthy and exercising. As a doctor, I know bodies respond to treatments better when they’re healthy,” she said. “And it’s important to me to be active and check off some of these bucket list things, to prove to myself that I can, that I’m recovered.”
In October, Zide ran the Detroit Free Press Half Marathon with the goal of raising $15,000. As of today, she has raised more than $26,000.
"Race day was nice, decent weather, maybe a tad chilly," said Elizabeth. "I surprised myself with a faster time than anticipated. Definitely not a personal record, but that was never the goal!! As in recovery, life, etc there is no quitting!! I tried to keep a fun attitude and made sure to thank the police and volunteers along the route."
NETRF is tremendously grateful to Elizabeth and all her supporters for their outstanding fundraising.
