Experts and researchers are working hard to learn more about the emerging Omicron variant of COVID-19. Although there are still many unanswered questions, what we do know is that "as a community we can continue to protect each other by wearing masks, staying home and getting tested when we have symptoms, and avoiding large gatherings," says Kaylin Soldat, Associate Director for Primary Care at UP's Health and Counseling Center. "In addition, anyone who is eligible for a COVID booster should receive one."
The eligibility criteria for boosters is now based purely on the time that has elapsted since your last dose. All adults 18+ are eligible if it’s been 6 months since their second dose of Moderna or Pfizer or 2 months since they received one dose of the J&J vaccine.
"Scientists believe the COVID vaccine likely provides protection against variants, even if the vaccines were not specifically tailored to the variant," says Soldat. If you’re unsure if you are eligible for a booster or how to find one, contact the Health and Counseling Center for assistance.
