Johns Hopkins APL Forges Pathway to Stronger Alloys for Extreme Environments
APL researchers are accelerating multi-principal element alloy (MPEA) design by creating complex microstructures that provide composition information from only a few samples. The researchers developed a design capability to synthesize 17 unique MPEA compositions and present characterization data on over 7,000 unique data points.

APL Conducts Exercise to Simulate Global Asteroid Impact Response
NASA has released a summary of the fifth iteration of a Planetary Defense U.S. Government Interagency Tabletop Exercise, which was held at APL in April. The two-day exercise brought together domestic and international leaders to discuss, coordinate and evaluate a global response to a simulated asteroid impact threat to Earth.

Unveiling the Nation’s Bold Strategy to Advance Environmental DNA: Key Workshop Takeaways
Over 250 scientists, practitioners and policymakers recently gathered on APL’s campus for the Third National Workshop on Marine Environmental DNA. The meeting featured the launch of a new federal aquatic eDNA National Strategy, discussed state-of-the-art eDNA science, and identified implementation opportunities that will realize the full potential of eDNA as a tool to monitor aquatic ecosystems.

Vice Chief of Naval Operations Visits APL
Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jim Kilby visited APL on July 24 along with members of his staff. Kilby met with technical experts and visited several of the Laboratory’s state-of-the-art research facilities. He and his team received technical briefings focused on innovations APL develops for sponsors like the U.S. Navy across a number of critical national security capabilities, including integrated air and missile defense, sea control and long-range fires.

APL Launches Space Science Postdoctoral Scholars Program
APL is launching a new program that will enable postdoctoral scholars to participate in the Laboratory’s cutting-edge space projects. The program is named after Stamatios “Tom” Krimigis, a space exploration pioneer who served as science instrument principal investigator on five NASA missions, including Voyager and the Cassini orbiter to Saturn.
