Free Screening of Vegan: Everyday Stories
Join us for a free screening of the new documentary Vegan: Everyday Stories. This film explores the lives of four remarkably different people who share a common thread - they're all vegan. The movie traces the personal journeys of an ultramarathon runner who has overcome addiction to compete in one-hundred mile races, a rancher's wife who creates the first cattle ranch turned farmed animal sanctuary in Texas, a food truck owner cooking up amazing plant-based food, and an eight-year-old girl who convinces her family of six to go vegan.
There are many great movies focusing on why to go vegan or featuring people new to veganism, but this movie spotlights how everyday people and their families, each pursuing their own careers, hobbies, and passions, live their lives while following a vegan lifestyle. Join ARC Vegan University mentors Ashley and Makai for the film and stay for the Q&A and discussion afterwards. The screening is on Saturday, June 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Northeast Library, 2200 Central Ave. NE in Minneapolis. You can see a preview here. Please RSVP at Vegan Meetup
ARC Volunteer Day/Sod Day at Chicken Run Rescue
A team of ARC volunteers helped with spring cleanup at Chicken Run Rescue, removed old sod and replaced it with new, and watched the chickens as they greeted the green stuff for the first time since last fall. Volunteers also had time to snuggle the chickens and enjoy a vegan lunch of white bean chili and cornbread from ARC Program Director Chelsea Youngquist. See more photos in the Chicken Run Rescue Sod Day album on Facebook.
Outreach at the May Day Festival
Ryan and Katie were ready for the crowd at the May Day Festival in
Powderhorn Park. We handed out 465 pieces of literature about plant-based eating along with info about our Vegan University and VegKins programs, and gave out stickers and comic books to the kids. And 146 people signed our petition to Hennepin County Medical Center to stop using live animals in medical training. Thanks to Ryan, Katie, Laura, Shaun, Daniil, Troi, and Sean for staffing the ARC booth!
Vegan Waffle Party 2016
Amy and Dan talking to new folks at the Vegan Waffle Party, an annual event that lets us begin new conversations about where our food comes from and the effects of our food choices. Over 100 people attended this year; at least half were newcomers.
Vegan Waffle Party
ARC board members and staff made lots of delicious vegan waffles and guests brought vegan waffle toppings to share. The possible combinations were endless. Here's just one of the mouth-watering creations.
Meet ARC's Summer Intern
Yasmeen Saad is ARC's intern this summer. Yasmeen is enrolled in the University of Minnesota's Community Engagement Scholars Program where the goal is to make an impact in our community. She wanted to work somewhere that was related to her major and areas of interest and that's how she found ARC. Yasmeen is majoring in Environmental Science, Policy Management, with a minor in Political Science. She hopes to attend law school after graduation and become an environmental lawyer. Please give Yasmeen a warm ARC welcome when you see her in the office on Fridays.
ARC at Fridley Middle School
Chelsea spoke to six classes at
Fridley Middle School about veganism and speciesism. She reported: "The students were attentive and engaged. They asked all sorts of questions and made great connections."  ARC intern Yasmeen assisted and the students all got to sample Chao vegan cheese.
Become a Member of the Animal Rights Coalition!
If you're a member of the Animal Rights Coalition, you'll soon be receiving your annual renewal notice in the mail or online asking you to continue supporting ARC's successful animal advocacy programs. If you're not a member yet, please join us by signing up here. If you're on the fence, consider this: You care about animals. We care about animals. Let's get together and support each other and do even more good for animals. Because together we're better. Just look at everything we accomplished for animals in 2015  and we're continuing to build on our 30-year history of helping animals in 2016: expanding our community of animal advocates, opening minds and hearts in our community to the plight of animals, and supporting a rapidly growing network of new vegans.
Want to Help Animals?
Join the ARC In Action meeting on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at 317 W 48th St. in Minneapolis. You don't have to be veg to participate. We'd like to get to know you, and the animals need your help. If you can't make a meeting, just fill out our online volunteer form.
Upcoming Outreach Events
ARC will have booths at the upcoming Minnesota Pet Expo on Saturday, 6/11 from 10-6 and Sunday, 6/12 from 11-4 at the Minneapolis Convention Center, and at the Twin Cities Pride Festival  on Saturday 6/25 from 10-8 and Sunday 6/26 from 10-6 in Loring Park in Minneapolis. We'll be doing Pay Per View outreach at the Pride Festival. Both of these events are great places to try volunteering if you've never done outreach before. Email chelsea@animalrightscoalition.com if you're interesting in helping out.
