Putting the Moon under a quantum diamond microscope
In an exercise that shows the potential of quantum sensing, Arts & Sciences researchers used their quantum diamond microscope — a device that runs on a flawed diamond crystal — to measure the magnetic properties of a tiny piece of Moon rock.
Zoltán Váci, a former McDonnell Center Postdoctoral Fellow, is one of the coauthors on a paper recently published in Physical Review Applied.

PUEO (The Payload for Ultrahigh Energy Observations) is scheduled to launch soon! Once the balloon inflation starts it's a little over an hour until launch. PUEO is hoping to detect very high energy neutrinos interacting with the Antarctic ice.
WashU built the power system and fabricated much of the gondola. Lindsey Lisalda and Richard Bose are currently in Antarctica to prepare it.

ASTRAL-X X-ray Astronomy School
Prof. Michael Nowak just spent two weeks in Argentina at the ASTRAL-X X-ray Astronomy School, a workshop for graduate students from Latin-America sponsored by IAU (International Astronomical Union) I-HOW program and COSPAR (Committee on Space Research Capacity Building Workshops.

He lectured on high energy astrophysics studies utilizing the NASA Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), and mentored several students in short analysis projects using data obtained from public astrophysics archives. At the end of the two weeks, the workshop students gave short presentations on what they had learned during the workshop. Participants are then eligible to apply for fellowships to continue the program by participating in 6-week long projects mentored by faculty who participated in the workshops.
