From climate change and food systems to environmental degradation, you’ll explore how local issues connect to global solutions—and what it means to lead in a changing world.

GEOG 3195/6293: Cultivating Sustainability Leadership: Connecting Local and Global Perspectives is a short‑term, faculty‑led program taught by GW Associate Professor of Geography and International Affairs,, Dr. Moses Kansanga. This short‑term study abroad program in Ghana examines critical  sustainability challenges—climate change, food systems, community resilience—and gives you the chance to work directly with the people shaping solutions on the ground.

Chloë De Smedt, a recent graduate of the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University, has carved a path at the intersection of food security, policy, and sustainability. With a concentration in International Environmental Studies and minors in Food Leadership and Sustainability, she brings passion and perspective to some of today’s most urgent challenges. 

Chloë reflects on how GFI and the Food Leadership Minor shaped her journey:

"Having worked in restaurants, established a baking business of my own, and coming from a family where food is a large part of our culture, I had been exposed to food in different contexts and wanted to further my knowledge of food as it relates to culture, policy, and sustainability."

Available to graduate students interested in food systems, public health, sustainability, and policy. Interns gain hands-on experience and rotate across three major programs: Food Is Medicine, Regenerative School Meals, and the Periodic Table of Food Initiative.
