Dear university community,

Today, we were informed that one of our students has tested positive for COVID-19. The student, who does not live on campus, is currently being treated in isolation, as recommended by the Kansas City Health Department.

UMKC is working closely with public health officials, who will reach out to people who may have had contact with the individual and provide guidance to anyone found to be at risk of contracting the virus.

Although campus is now closed, UMKC continues to strongly encourage our campus community to follow the social distancing regulations now in effect in Missouri and Kansas. We know the growing number of cases nationally and in our region is concerning. While these concerns are understandable, it is extremely important to remain calm. We should all continue to follow Centers for Disease Control advice and pay attention to our personal health and any symptoms that may arise. The COVID-19 symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath.

If you develop these symptoms, please seek medical attention and call your health care provider before arriving. UMKC students can contact the Student Health and Wellness Center at 816-235-6133. More information is available on the UMKC coronavirus web page.

Students — both on campus and remote — are invited to reach out to the Counseling Center and Student Health and Wellness Center. For faculty and staff, the Employee Assistance Program offers confidential, professional counseling, referrals to legal and financial services and other types of assistance to all employees and their families.

Sincerely,

C. Mauli Agrawal, Ph.D.
