Dear students,
Welcome back to the University of Oregon! We are excited for another year of learning, growth, and connection.
College is a time to encounter new ideas. Some will inspire you; others may push you outside your comfort zone, and at times, you may hear views that deeply challenge your own. This is part of the power of a university community: a place where people bring diverse perspectives, experiences, and passions, and where dialogue helps us see the world and each other more fully. How we engage with one another matters, especially when disagreements are significant and emotions run high.
At the UO, we are steadfast in protecting your right to free expression. That right comes with important responsibilities. I encourage you to watch a short video explaining how the UO’s approach to free expression connects with state law and university policy. To better understand the policies that guide expressive activity on campus, students are encouraged to visit the Know Our Policies section of the free speech website at freespeech.uoregon.edu.
Free expression is a vital part of campus life. Title VI and UO policy prohibit discrimination and harassment based on race, color, national origin, ancestry, and religion. At the same time, even offensive speech may be protected speech. If you have questions about when expression may cross into prohibited harassment, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access (OEOA) offers guidance in its FAQ. You can also connect with OEOA to discuss your options or find support.
We want students to understand their rights and feel supported in expressing their views. If you plan to engage in expressive activity, I invite you to talk with us. The UO has a proud tradition of student activism, and we can help you understand relevant expectations, connect you with resources, and help you make your voice heard while respecting the rights of others.
If you have concerns about your rights or safety, the Office of the Dean of Students and our campus partners are here to help. You can report a concern online or contact our office at 541-346-3216. You can also find resources on our website.
Free expression can be uncomfortable, even unsettling, but it is central to public higher education. A strong university community makes room for disagreement, advocacy, and calls for change. It also makes room for one another. Thank you for helping build a campus where ideas can be exchanged with curiosity, respect, and courage.
Go Ducks!
