Hours Update

We are now operating on low-season hours. This includes reduced hours and admission by donation at Nitobe Memorial Garden and UBC Botanical Garden. The Greenheart TreeWalk is closed until April 1, 2023. The Shop in the Garden is closed until March 1, 2023. Please visit our website for a complete list of hours until Spring 2023.

Please note that both gardens occasionally close due to weather, so please check our website before visiting.

Lunar New Year Market

January 14th - 15th | 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Update: A list of confirmed vendors has now been posted on our website.

Join us for our first Lunar New Year event in 2023 to welcome the year of the rabbit! Local Makers, Artists, and Crafters will be selling their goods. The festive event will also feature lion dances, kung fu performances from UBC Kung Fu Club, and dance performances from UBC Hanfu Culture Society and YunTang Dance Club. UBC Botanical Garden's Shop in the Garden will also offer fresh flowers and potted plants.

Cost: $5 plus tax and fees

Recycle your Christmas Tree

December 26 - January 9 | 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
$5 suggested donation

Bring your tree to UBC Botanical Garden and we will chip it into mulch to use on our pathways. We also collect donations that directly support a local school garden project. This year donations will support students at Britannia Community Elementary located in the Grandview Woodland neighbourhood. Help SPEC (Society Promoting Environmental Conservation) continue to provide free and equitable access to vulnerable students as part of their gardening program which includes a focus on ecological literacy. Students are currently fundraising to renovate their gardening space to replace three very old and damaged garden beds, purchase compost and create a pollinator-friendly habitat.

Happy New Year! Following December’s discussion of Australasian conifers, as promised this blog post is devoted to South American ones. For the most part, these species and their Australasian counterparts are not as cold-hardy as many of the familiar conifers we grow in gardens or those that are locally wild. Ours are all native to the southern Andes Mountains, constituents of the Valdivian temperate rainforests and the Magellanic subpolar forests. A good number are well-suited to the Botanical Garden, and to Vancouver more generally.

Museum of Anthropology Closure

Visit the Museum of Anthropology at UBC before January 16. It will be temporarily closed for most of 2023 to complete seismic upgrades to its iconic Great Hall. Don’t miss this opportunity to spend time at this stunning museum before the temporary closure. Admission is free for UBC students, staff and faculty!
