Volunteer of the Year Event

In honor of National Volunteer Month, the Volunteer Center held its Volunteer of the Year event Thursday, April 19, at Temple Beth El.  Thirty individuals and seven groups nominated by area agencies were recognized during this annual celebration of volunteerism.

This year two people received the Adult Volunteer of the Year Award. The first one went to Ginny Jones, the founder and volunteer CEO of New Digs Ministries. This agency collects and provides free furnishings and household good to families in need.  The second recipient was Kathryn McCorkle for her work with Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA.  She has served as board chair and long-range property planning committee chair. She helped stabilize the agency financially and they are seeing an increase in revenue and participation.
Local Students Make a Difference Through Youth Day of Caring

On Friday, April 6, more than 200 high school students volunteered for United Way of the Capital Region’s 16th Annual Youth Day of Caring.

The students worked with 50 adult volunteers from United Way’s Bridges Society to complete a full-scale clean-up of Harrisburg’s City Island. The Bridges Society connects a diverse group of emerging leaders through giving and volunteering.

Volunteers were able to tackle projects that would otherwise have taken weeks for the city’s small park maintenance staff to complete. Weeds and overgrown brush were cleared, the entire island was mulched, trees were planted the train station was painted and trash cans were painted. Additionally, the students did a clean-up along Front Street. Thanks to the day’s efforts, the park is now ready for people from our entire community to enjoy.

Juniors and seniors from the following 10 high schools participated: Camp Hill, Central Dauphin East, Commonwealth Charter Academy, Cougar Academy, John Harris, Lower Dauphin, Middletown, Red Land, SciTech and Susquehanna Township.

Youth Day of Caring was sponsored by Members 1st Federal Credit Union (Lead Sponsor) and Capital BlueCross & Healthy You Cafe (Lunch Sponsor). Additional sponsorship was provided by Harrisburg Kiwanis Youth Foundation, F&M Trust, Penn National Insurance, PSECU and BL Companies.

Calling all Amateur Photographers!

We have had great success using volunteer photographers for Day of Caring and Youth Day of Caring. We are interested in expanding this to other events, including our affinity group events.

If you are someone who enjoys taking photos and have your own camera, this is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. Our plan is to assemble a group of amateur photographers that we can reach out to when we have events. You could pick and choose the events that fit into your schedule. After the event, you’ll be provided with instructions on uploading your photos to a drop box.

If you are interested in being part of this group, please contact Heidi Neuhaus at hneuhaus@uwcr.org.
